thinking about how sweet, curious, and full of personality shrimps are. i love those little guys.
when i was a kid and i didn’t know any better i kept a few ghost shrimp and they were some of my best friends. i loved them, so so much, and i did everything for them. and yet, i still had such intense cognitive dissonance that i would eat farmed shrimp without a second thought, and a lot of them.
big animal agriculture would brainwash EVERYONE into eating dogs and cats the same way if it could turn a significant profit. everyone always scoffs when vegan activists make the comparison “would you treat your dog or cat this way?” but all it takes is collective cognitive dissonance and normalization until the cat or dog on your plate simply doesn’t register as the cat or dog sitting next to you, receiving your love.
going #vegan has been the most intense exercise in unbrainwashing myself i’ve ever done and it feels amazing but holy fuck it is wild to look at society in this new lens. our capitalist overlords truly have taken over our minds and it’s horrifying and incredibly depressing. all of these animals we torture for our pleasure are no different from our companion animals. if there’s a local farm sanctuary near you, get out there and meet them. cut through the fog and see for yourself
@ivy Out of curiosity... did your pet shrimps engage with you in the same way dogs and cats engage with their people? I am not being facetious, but I am asking an honest question... (as an aside, I don't eat shrimp as they look too much like cockroaches for my mental well-being).
@calsnoboarder yes, they did! they recognized me specifically, would hop on my hands to play and eat, and would watch me through the glass curiously and engage with their shrimp friends, snails, and other fish. they’re really intelligent creatures!
