KATE BUSH
On Stage
1979 Canada pressing

Lunch with Kate.

Only 17 mins long, but lots of bang for the buck here, particularly “James And The Cold Gun”.

Kate was only 21 yrs old here, and has FULL command of everything. You can tell why everyone was so smitten with her AND her otherworldly talents back then.

Sometimes, you can’t ignore a person’s gifts. There’s so obvious that it’s like being punched in the face.

What an artist.

Billie Holiday, Songs for Distingué Lovers, 1958 on Verve

Great set of recordings, with liner notes by Norman Granz. No real detail on the sessions on the record itself, but apparently recorded during sessions in January 1957 in Hollywood – the same sessions that yielded All or Nothing at All and Body and Soul.

Wonderful versions of “Stars Fell on Alabama” and “One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)” in particular.

Granz writes on the liner notes:

. . . quite possibly the best liner notes ever written about Miss Holiday singing songs would be simply to say to the listener ‘this is a fact: Miss Holiday has happened to some songs’ and to the discriminating listener that ought to suffice.

My copy is a 2024 Barnes & Noble exclusive pressing on yellow vinyl, pressed at GZ Media. May be from a digital source (no credit for mastering – though it is a licensed recording, not a grey market one) but sounds great.

JENNIFER WARNES
First We Take Manhattan / Coming Back To You
1986 Canada 7” single

Warnes’ version of Leonard Cohen’s song “First We Take Manhattan” definitely goes in my Top 10 favorite covers of all time.
Her whole album of Cohen covers is quite excellent (Famous Blue Raincoat), and Cohen didn’t even release his version of Manhattan until almost 2 years AFTER Warnes’ version (on I’m Your Man).

Nice little morsel for last spin of the night.

THE SIX
The Six
1982 Canada pressing
(Self released)

A really obscure, but really great #folk -y #powerpop record.

I have no idea where in Canada they come from. Just that it’s three dudes bashing out some really fun, catchy, rock n roll.

This was the only thing they recorded/released, and I’m thankful for it. Well worth the .50 I paid for it from a thrift store well over a decade ago.

STEELY DAN
Greatest Hits
1978 U.S. 2xLP pressing

In many ways, a perfect Sunday morning record.

I resisted ever exploring their catalog too deeply until I was in my mid 30s. They just never seemed like they’d be my thing, and when I was in my teens and twenties, what I did hear didn’t make much impact on me.

Guess it just takes time for certain things to speak to you in your life.

BTW… greatest band ever named after a fictional sex toy.
