Vintage Buses 🚌<p>Leyland Lion PLSC1 with the replica body built by Leyland in 1981. Currently on display at the Manchester Transport Museum.</p><p>Take a look at this handsome fellow. I really like this style of vintage bus, with the radiator grille so prominent. A proper bus.</p><p>I remember when I saw my first rear engine double decker bus while on holiday in Morecombe many moons ago. I hated it - and I still believe that these flat fronted boxes on wheels are ugly, they just lack style and class.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>Here is that Leyton Titan PD2/12 again, this time showing the correct width. The previous photo taken in a hurry (a horde of primary P1 little urchins were descending upon me) with the Pixel 6a had this bus gain weight.</p><p>Description of bus on the 2nd photo.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchestertransportmuseum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchestertransportmuseum</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>Here's a mixed bag of items from the Manchester Transport Museum.</p><p>Photos showing the colours and logos/crests of the various councils, and old ticket machines.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchestertransportmuseum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchestertransportmuseum</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchester</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>Karrier Motors 1928.</p><p>This is what I call a Vintage Classic. Lots of work has gone into the restoration of this vehicle and credit is due to the Huddersfield preservationist who practically rebuilt this fine specimen, which is currently on display at the Manchester Transport Museum.</p><p>Read the story of its restoration on the second photo.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchestertransportmuseum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchestertransportmuseum</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchester</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>Foden chassis, Lawton body and a Gardner engine. Currently on display at the Manchester Transport Museum.</p><p>This bus was purchased new in 1949 by Coppenhall Coaches and was sold to R Bullock Coaches in 1954. </p><p>More information in the 3rd photo.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchestertransportmuseum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchestertransportmuseum</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchester</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>Back home after being at the Manchester Transport Museum. Train delays and when I got home, torrential rain slowed down the traffic on the motorway, but our McGill's bus driver made a few detours to avoid the worst congestion. You could not do that on a tramcar, trolleybus or train - just saying. 😜 </p><p> I took about 123 photographs.</p><p>How's this for an opener? A Leyland Titan PD3/14. In service 1968-1981, full details on the last photo.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchester</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchestertransportmuseum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchestertransportmuseum</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>Had a great day in Manchester. Heading to the bar now at my hotel to have a whisky - purely for medicinal purposes, you understand. :blobwizard: </p><p>Checking my camera, I noticed that the bright sunlight bouncing off every mirrored surface in the garage was causing havoc with some of the photos, but I'll tidy them up when I get home.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchestertransportmuseum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchestertransportmuseum</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchester</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>I'm sitting in the tearoom at Manchester's Transport Museum having cottage pie, chips and a nice mug of tea ( only £4.85 the lot). The staff are very friendly.</p><p>Back in Scotland tomorrow.</p><p>Here's a quick snap taken on the Pixel 6a.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchestertransportmuseum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchestertransportmuseum</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manchester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manchester</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>This lovely yellow and red single decker is a 1950 Albion Valiant CX39N, with a Duple C33F body. It was originally operated by Hutchison of Overtown. </p><p> The bus was sold to Tuer of Morland, (near Penrith). Later, it returned to Scotland, and operate as part of the Highland Bus Service.</p><p>At this point, I can't find any specific routes in which this bus was in service, but I'll delve deeper later.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gvvt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gvvt</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/albion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>albion</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>I found this excellent YouTube video about Glasgow buses and the people who drove them. Listen to the broad Glaswegian accents as former drivers describe their experiences and happy memories.</p><p>Then watch as the procession of vintage buses drive through Glasgow, led by the oldest bus in the garage, the 1928 Leyland Titan TD1. </p><p>Note: I'm off to the Transport Museum in Manchester next Wednesday.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gvvt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gvvt</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/QjKTFCkdE0k?feature=shared" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/QjKTFCkdE0k?feature=s</span><span class="invisible">hared</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>I know, I know, I'm obsessed with this 1928 Leyland Titan TD1.</p><p>Here's a short clip of the bus running, picking up passengers on Open Day to take them to the Bridgeton Bus Garage, where the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust have their collection.</p><p>The bus's unreliable original petrol engine has been replaced by a diesel engine of the same period.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/leylandtitan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>leylandtitan</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gvvt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gvvt</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/5rpnBSl_GeM?si=ekGC8uRj3Oo8W1wr" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/5rpnBSl_GeM?si=ekGC8u</span><span class="invisible">Rj3Oo8W1wr</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>The Aldenham Works, where London Routemasters were serviced. I reckon Routemasters could have been in service for many years more, but once one-person-operated buses came into operation, two-person crew Routemasters were not cost effective.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/routemaster" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>routemaster</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/9XWTdys3TEA?si=PnZQQQENF27bgQnx" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/9XWTdys3TEA?si=PnZQQQ</span><span class="invisible">ENF27bgQnx</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>Here is where the hard work is done restoring these vintage buses so that they will still run, probably after I'm long gone.</p><p>This is part of the restoration area at the Bridgeton Bus Garage where owners can work on their buses. Those of you in the UK and particularly in Scotland may recognise the liveries of some of these old classics.</p><p>Click the photo to enlarge</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bridgetonbusgarage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bridgetonbusgarage</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gvvt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gvvt</span></a></p>
Vintage Buses 🚌<p>This little blue beauty is the Leyland Lion LT5B, built in August 1934. It was powered by one of the first 6-cylinder 8.6-litre diesel engines and in 1947, it was re-bodied by Burlingham.</p><p>Operated by Alexander &amp; Sons limited as fleet number P169, it serviced the Glasgow to Inverness route in the first 10 years of service.</p><p>P169 is part of the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust collection at Bridgeton Bus Garage.</p><p>Isn't she a beauty? Vintage Buses 🚌<p>Hi folks </p><p>Just joined today. I'm a retired Scottish gentleman interested in vintage buses and I hope to post some interesting facts as we go along. </p><p>I'm building a website using Hugo and I'm currently visiting transport museums and collecting photographs.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagebuses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagebuses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/buses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>buses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/transport" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transport</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/scotland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>scotland</span></a></p>
