Factors contributing directly to platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) mortality and implications for conserving populations in the wild

" Based on details of more than 400 platypus deaths with an identifiable cause recorded since 1989,
five main factors contributed directly to platypus mortalities:

drowning in fish nets or enclosed crustacean traps (such as opera house traps),
being killed by predators (especially canids),
becoming accidentally hooked by recreational anglers who then cut the line,
becoming entangled in discarded fishing line or other types of litter and
being hit by motor vehicles

... Additional mortality factors included drought, severe flooding, being drawn into irrigation pumps and entrapment in manmade materials or infrastructure.

Disease was implicated as being the likely causal agent in two platypus deaths, including a female that died late in lactation.

Platypus mortalities were recorded throughout the year on the southeastern Australian mainland but peaked in early autumn, when many recently weaned juveniles are likely to be present. Given the very high number of platypus mortalities attributed to the use of fish nets or enclosed crustacean traps, their use should be banned in all waters where platypus population are known to occur. Folks working in tech, ask yourselves:

“Am I making tools or am I making traps?”

If you’re doing the latter (and, let’s face it, if you work in Big Tech, you’re 99% doing the latter), maybe you should think about where and how you can do the former instead.

Y’know, ’cos democracy and even the future of the species might depend on it.

👀 He has some #danger zones according to the #AP.

with 14,314 killed in 2023 compared to 364,734 in 2019.

According to the new data, the wildlife-killing program unintentionally killed more than 2,484 animals in 2023, including 658 river #otters and 428 #turtles, as well as several dogs and cats. Its killing of nontarget birds included a federally protected #GoldenEagle, #WoodDucks, great #BlueHerons and #WildTurkeys. Such data reveals the indiscriminate nature of leghold #traps, #snares, #poisons and other methods used by federal agents.

Across Victoria, there are 17 community groups engaging in Dingo control, and each management zone is allocated a government employed ‘wild-dog controller’ to assist in the lethal management of Dingoes. These groups deploy foothold #traps, and 1080 #baits, with the aim of killing Dingoes in the area. Unbelievably, the Victorian government also offer a #bounty to hunters to submit Dingo #pelts too.

Mastodon I'm desparate and need your help.

We've got a rat or rats in the walls, and ceiling and they absolutely stink.

My partner is pregnant and the smell is making her pretty sick.

I've even managed to see it below the floorboards. Does anyone have any advice on how to best catch the thing? I can't poison it because it will die in the walls and smell worse, I'd be willing to try anything at this point!

Because #snares don’t discriminate, “non-targeted” species — including #RiverOtters, #rabbits, and #birds — also end up dying in these monstrous #traps.

That’s a particularly important point given that the National Wildlife Refuge System is incredibly #biodiverse — with more than 700 birds, 220 mammals, and more than 380 #EndangeredSpecies.

The wild animals who call these protected lands their home should not be gruesomely and inhumanely killed simply because they exist.

BAN VICIOUS SNARES FROM NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGES

Wild animals are having their bones crushed, their spines snapped, and their lives slowly suffocated out of them in vicious #traps that are currently legal and allowed in #NationalWildlifeRefuges.

Now, a new bill seeks to end this torture. The #RefugeFromCruelTrappingAct, or H.R. 5217, seeks to amend the National Wildlife Refuge System Administration Act to ban the use of steel-jaw leg-hold traps,
