Donald Trump’s "border czar" has admitted that authorities have found it “hard” to find undocumented immigrants with criminal records.
In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on State of the Union,
#Tom #Homan said that whole teams of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are having to raid neighborhoods to carry out the administration’s deportation plans.
“It is hard because rather than one man arresting one bad guy in a jail, we’ve got to send a whole team to the field to find someone that doesn’t want to be found,” he said in an interview Sunday.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) fired back at #Tom #Homan, Trump’s "border czar",
after he suggested that she could be “in trouble” for advice she is giving to immigrants if they are targeted in one of Homan’s raids.
“Believe it or not, in America EVERYONE has rights,” she wrote on X.
“Citizen or not, we all should know our rights to protect ourselves and others from illegal search & seizure.”
She included graphics reminding people that they don’t have to allow authorities into their home without a warrant, and that they have a right to remain silent when questioned
On Thursday, 25-year-old #DOGE staff member #Marko #Elez resigned after being linked to a deleted social media account that advocated racism and eugenics.
Elez resigned after The Wall Street Journal asked the White House about his connection to the account.
“Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool,” the account posted in July.
“You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity,” the account wrote on X in September.
“Normalize Indian hate,” the account wrote the same month, in reference to a post noting the prevalence of people from India in Silicon Valley.
Elez’s resignation came a day after the Department of Justice agreed to limit the number of DOGE employees who have access to federal payment systems.
The DOJ said access would be limited to two people, Elez and #Tom #Krause, the CEO of a company called Cloud Software Group.
Earlier Friday, Musk said he planned to rehire Elez after President Trump and Vice President JD Vance reportedly endorsed the idea.
Speaking at The White House today, Trump said he wasn’t concerned about the security of personal information and other data accessed by DOGE, adding that he was “very proud of the job that this group of young people” are doing.
A White House official told Reuters on Wednesday that Musk and his engineers have appropriate security clearances and are operating in “full compliance with federal law, appropriate security clearances, and as employees of the relevant agencies, not as outside advisors or entities.”
NPR reports Trump added that his administration’s cost-cutting efforts would soon turn to the Education Department and the Pentagon, “where he suggested without evidence that there could be ‘trillions’ of dollars in wasted spending within the $6.75 trillion the federal government spent in fiscal year 2024.”
GOP leaders in the Republican-controlled House and Senate have largely shrugged about Musk’s ongoing efforts to seize control over federal databases, dismantle agencies mandated by Congress, freeze federal spending on a range of already-appropriated government programs, and threaten workers with layoffs.
Meanwhile, multiple parties have sued to stop DOGE’s activities. ABC News says a federal judge was to rule today on whether DOGE should be blocked from accessing Department of Labor records, following a lawsuit alleging Musk’s team sought to illegally access highly sensitive data, including medical information, from the federal government.
At least 13 state attorneys general say they plan to file a lawsuit to stop DOGE from accessing federal payment systems containing Americans’ sensitive personal information, reports The Associated Press.
Reuters reported Thursday that the U.S. Treasury Department had agreed not to give Musk’s team access to its payment systems while a judge is hearing arguments in a lawsuit by employee unions and retirees alleging Musk illegally searched those records.
Ars Technica writes that The Department of Education (DoE) was sued Friday by a California student association demanding an “immediate stop” to DOGE’s “unlawfully” digging through student loan data to potentially dismantle the DoE.

Two prominent Republican senators have split with President Trump over his decisionto sever government security for former officials who are in Iran’s crosshairs.
Last week, Trump, 78, cut off funding for security for former Secretary of State Mike #Pompeo, ex-National Security Adviser John #Bolton and others.
Sens. #Lindsey #Graham of South Carolina and #Tom #Cotton of Arkansas, both outspoken GOP backers of Trump, are now encouraging the president to reevaluate that move.
“If people are going to work for the president now on Iran or China or North Korea or the Mexican drug cartels,
they might hesitate to do so”
because of the security withdrawal, Cotton warned

Trump border chief threatens jail for Denver mayor amid deportation dispute
#Tom #Homan, Donald Trump’s hardline incoming #border #czar, has threatened to put the mayor of #Denver in jail
after the latter said he was willing to risk incarceration to resist the president-elect’s migrant mass deportation plan.
The threat was issued against #Mike #Johnston, a Democrat, who said he was not afraid of being jailed and encouraged people to protest against mass round-ups of immigrants in their cities and communities.
Johnston’s remarks came after Trump focused during the presidential election campaign on the Denver suburb of #Aurora, which he said had become “a war zone” where apartment buildings had been taken over by Venezuelan gang members.
Asked to respond by Fox News’s Sean Hannity, Homan said: “Me and the Denver mayor, we agree on one thing;
he’s willing to go to jail. I’m willing to put him in jail.”
Johnston had originally been asked by a local Denver television station to respond to Homan’s previous vows to arrest local leaders and politicians who stood in the way of deportation efforts.
He said he was not willing to go to jail, though he is “not afraid of that” in a Friday interview with 9 News.
“I think the goal is we want to be able to negotiate with reasonable people how to solve hard problems,” he told the outlet.

In February 2022, #Tom #Homan went to the Orlando World Center Marriott in Orlando, Florida, and took a seat among a group of young #white #supremacists.

— his assistant had booked him at the event, he said, and had likely confused America First, the event’s organizer, with another right-wing group.
Sitting at the table, waiting for the event to begin, Homan got out his phone and looked up Nick Fuentes, the leader of America First, and came across a bunch of articles labeling him a “white nationalist.”
This didn’t prompt Homan to get up and leave. He was skeptical of the label “white nationalist.”
After all, he knew what it was like to be unfairly labeled a bigot and a racist during his time overseeing ICE. Maybe Fuentes had suffered the same injustice.
But then he read that Fuentes had praised Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Homan got up from the table, leaving the conference before it began.
