So.
Why the fuck is @debian @thunderbird creating an .icedove folder on a fresh install of Debian 12 Bookworm, where a perfectly fine .thunderbird-folder with all profiles exists?
There's no need for it to be created during the Thunderbird runtime.

And I can confirm that it does not exist and get's created only after a startup of
Thunderbird with an existing profile in .thunderbird.
Just … why?

It's not even covered here¹, or should be the case of `1. Check if there is no folder or symlink named ~/.thunderbird .
2. Inform the user that an adoption of the existing Icedove profile will happen.
3. Create a symlink from ~/.thunderbird ~/.icedove . `

The wrapper script can just ignore this or not even run on a fresh install.

The fix is to rename .thunderbird into .icedove and then make a symlink from .thunderbird to .icedove or start Thunderbird, have the error shown again and it make the symlink. m)

For my personal calendar, I have #Radicale 3.4.1 installed on a #Debian VPS. It works great, accessing it from #Thunderbird, or the "Fossify Calendar" (from #FDroid) in #Android. I can read and write events from both clients.

I was gifted an iPad, and the default Calendar app lets me have read-only access (only!) to Radicale. When it comes to writing events, that lofty privilege is reserved for iCloud Calendars only, not those riff-raff Calendars that use CalDAV.

Edit: I eventually sorted it out.

I opened a Github "Discussion" thread (for Radicale) on this:
github.com/Kozea/Radicale/disc

I guess the moral of this story is: Thunderbird, and Fossify Calendar, thanks for being sane! Also, kudos to #Davx5, which I also rely upon a lot in Android, for my CardDAV contacts to work properly - also stored in Radicale.

PS: #Apple is really hoity-toity. I would never choose into buying an Apple device myself, ever again. #DataSovereignty is next to impossible. #OpenSource

Dear Friends of giving up sending emails,

I can not do it any more. TOO STUPID for EMAIL sending? 😔

Que?

When did it get so hard and complex to use #Thunderbird? You go in and change the recommended settings provided by your ISP? That is it right?

Apparently not. In the end I had to go in and use their centralised outsourced cloud software just to read an email. 🙄

AY CARAMBA! [lobster swearing into the void)🤯

My only point of wisdom is the 8 Fold Path of #Buddhism in particular:

6. Wrong effort
If it's hard, you probably need to take it easy.

7. Wrong #mindfulness
Empty your mind of mindfulness. Be Mindless 🦋

Pah! Think I may have to turn myself over. Like a compost heap! ☯️

Meanwhile, have a great day. Swear at your computer. It can take the strain! 🙊

I am off to sit in the sun and #contemplate my naval... wait a minute, I have no navy... 🙃

The announcement of “Thundermail” (I.e. Thunderbird Pro) reads more like envy than a valid justification for monetisation.

Sure, Thunderbird might remain free, but it sows doubts as to whether any meaningful new feature will be added to it.

Why anyone would believe that they will intentionally hamper their own monetisation efforts for goodwill at this point, is frankly beyond me.

The enshitification of software continues…
