While not credited as such “The Cube” seems to take a good deal of inspiration from French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre’s “No Exit” (Available to read for free here: https://archive.org/details/noexitotherthree0000jean/page/n8/mode/1up) and American Science Fiction writer & poet Thomas M. Disch’s “The Squirrel Cage” (Available to read for free here: https://archive.org/details/fundamentaldisch0000disc/page/263/mode/1up?q=263)

“The Cube” was made as part of “The NBC Experiment in Television”, a late 60s/early 70s anthology series that was basically a more artistic version of “Playhouse 90”. Henson & Co. made 3 films for the series: “Youth 68”- a documentary, “The Cube”- an existentialist drama and “Inside My Head”- a back door pilot for an expanded version of a previous Henson muppet sketch
