#Zoomposium with #Donald #Bäcker (MoMa weatherman): “#weather, #climate and other #chaos

In connection with my new #energy and #climate blog, I was naturally also interested in the #possibilities of making #forecasts about possible #climate changes. To what extent this is possible and whether there might also be #technological #solutions for #climate stabilization,

* THE IMPACTS OF OSS FUNDING *
Some useful questions.

"" - What kinds of #social, #economic, and #technological impacts—both positive and negative, direct and indirect—can funding have on #OSS projects and their broader ecosystems over different time horizons?
""

""- How do different funding approaches influence OSS project outcomes and #community dynamics, and what are the relative merits and drawbacks of various funding approaches? ""

"" - What are potential unintended consequences of funding that need to be identified and mitigated? ""

"" - How, if at all, can we create meaningful metrics that capture the multiplier effects of funding and convey the return on public investment? ""

"" - How can or should we define and measure “success” in OSS #funding ""

NGI Commons · Measuring the Impacts of Public Funding on Open Source Software DevelopmentOpen source software (OSS) has become critical digital infrastructure, powering approximately 96% of codebases and constituting up to 90% of commercial software stacks. Traditionally maintained by volunteer communities, recent high-profile security vulnerabilities, such as Log4Shell in 2021 or the xz utils backdoor this year, have highlighted the unsustainability of relying solely on volunteer labour for maintaining such crucial infrastructure.

#Hello World #Introduction

I’m an artist and researcher working primarily with sound across music and art contexts. That is, I produce records, installations and play gigs. Over the last 10 years there has been a focus on sonifying data produced by surveillance tech and in general I’m interested in sound’s potential to engage with contemporary political contexts.
I’m also someone who feels conflicted about using social media - on the one hand I would happily not engage with it whatsoever but as an artist feel it’s necessary to have some visibility in these spaces. I tend to sporadically post about upcoming gigs or exhibitions and occasionally will share an article, usually about something happening in the tech space that I find particularly worrisome. In general I’m critical towards #technological solutionism and feel #tech won’t save us. However I am curious and hopeful for the potential of de-centralised platforms such as this and am extremely grateful to all the people whose energies go into developing alternatives to Big Tech and their increasingly centralised power and over-reach. Finally if you’ve got this far, thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts both based in research and from the heart. I look forward to following you back. <3

#Gerontocracy is the threat

Children who are raised in environments where adults are a threat are Built Different™.

#Leadership is about observing a void and stepping into occupy the space.

A lot of people observe a void and don’t do anything.

Very few have the skill to notice and the will to do something about it.

The reasons are #geopolitical, #technological, and #trauma-induced.

For supporters of a #hydrogen #transport economy, its all looking a bit like the Betamax/VHS choice in the 1980s (for this of you old enough to recall the river video system);

the promise of a #green #automotive system is increasingly taking the Betamax role; it may be a superior technology, but all the main #manufacturers are going down the #electricvehicles - #battery route (the VHS option).

the political economy of #technological advance is seldom easy to predict

I sometimes wish to somehow come to learn a #technological #secret that only I know about so that I then can make millions upon #millions off my particular #knowledge.

But even when I get to know secrets of my trade, they are so unique for the use in my trade that nobody would care about them. It's like knowing how to tickle a particular pear tree that currently lives at the #Seattle #homeDepot. Wow! You can tickle trees? Incredible! Oh only that one tree? Well let's go check it out! Oh #sold!

Again, I state, the greatest #technological risk we currently face isn't from #LLM-driven #AI, but from rapid and mostly unchecked advances in #genomic and #biological (#biomedical) #sciences.

Once we can literally create #human life in a #lab (it will definitely happen, soon), imagine what people like #PeterThiel and #governments like the #UnitedStates will try to achieve...

Boosting the efficiency of #SolarPanels beyond the #technological limitations of #silicon is another Everything, Everywhere, All at Once #ClimateChange mitigation solution that may be achieved by using #Perovskites.

"#Perovskites are yet another example of old #technology that's just starting to gain some traction in the world of #renewables...it was discovered...in 1839 and is a family of materials with the same #crystal structure as #CalciumTitaniumOxide (#CaTiO3)."

I've been thinking about #artificialintelligence, calls for its #regulation & some previous cases of #technological determinism.

As I've said here before, perhaps the best way of thinking about all this is to return to the work of #LewisMumford who makes the distinction between Authoritarian Technics & Democratic Technics... which encourages us to focus not on the characteristic(s) of #technology, but rather the #political interests of those who deploy & promote it.

So #Uber has finally started turning a profit.... how did they do that?

By making their #technological solution ever more efficient.... err no!

By cutting costs in their tech teams?.... wrong again

By moving to cheaper office space & re-negotiating their financing?.... nope not that either.

By upping their take on the fares charged by Uber drivers, effectively cutting their pay? yup, that's the one!

Of course, now labour markets are 'tighter' this may backfire... as drivers get other jobs!

It's these types of efforts where we need to focus basic and advanced #research, #scientific and #technological #exploration, and large-scale #commercial and #government #development.

Everything, Everywhere, All at Once is the most sound #global #philosophy and #strategy to potentially mitigate, and possibly reverse, the extreme damage we've done to our #climate and #environment.

It's what an #ecological #MoonShot means, to me.

I'm looking forward to seeing #Oppenheimer at our local full #IMAX theater.

The #technological innovations (including the first #BlackAndWhite IMAX #film) that went into making this #movie are worth paying for, for me.

The story and how it's told seem to be incredible, and I tend to avoid #biopics after learning how dishonest they can be (e.g. #TheButler).

And its 100 day #theatrical release window gives me hope for the future of #cinema.
