#sobriety

Before the awful festivities of tomorrow's holiday, I wanted to take a moment to reflect, as it will mark 17 years of #sobriety for me, personally.

It's been a tough road, and 45/47 definitely has made the past decade rough as all hell. But I keep showing up, one day at a time.

My health has declined since the first COVID infection in 2022, but even with these symptoms, it's a world of difference being sober. My liver and kidneys aren't constantly filtering poison from my body, and after 17 years of time off, maybe they're doing pretty great. Take a look at the before and after photos below...70 extra lbs is a lot to carry!

If you are questioning whether you need to stop drinking, or picking up that drug of choice: Don't lie to yourself. It's incredibly easy to lie to yourself, very difficult and admirable to reject lying to yourself in this moment.

If I can do this, you can do this. Stay strong. Stay alive.

Here's to tomorrow's challenges, which I will face like I did today's: With effort, but also resolve

Meanwhile..... action/reaction in the land of #TrumpVirus / #Muskville and the insane/criminals in charge of the hen house/asylum/junta

In March of 2024, I was one month shy of having nine years of sobriety. I broke my sobriety with a bottle of wine on a rough day. I thought I could drink like a normal person. At first, I did. Then it got bad again. Fast forward to now. I have been sober for nine days. Starting over is ROUGH. But I have to do it. For myself. I can't do it for my partner or my son. It's gotta be for me. I'm just taking it one day at a time.

With this in mind, we urgently need to make the right choices about how we use our equipment, and opt for greater #sobriety in order to reduce the environmental impact of digital technology ! 💬⏳

🛠️ Protecting our devices, taking care of them and keeping them for a long time is one of the most effective ways of reducing our daily impact. So, what's the oldest device you still own ? Share your record ! 🏅

This administration will require a marathon, not a sprint. Everything is alarming, but not every single thing is a 5-alarm-fire.

Last time I went through this admin I became an #alcoholic from a combination of genetics and groundlessless and daily heartbreak. I spent the Biden era getting my shit together.

Dooming feels like realism right now. But having destroyed my mind and body doing that before, it's not an option in #sobriety for me if I want to stay that way. Watch your habits!

#Alcohol use disorder, which affects over 10% of Americans, can lead to persistent and serious #insomnia. Difficulties falling asleep and staying asleep can last even after months of #sobriety, increasing the risk of relapse. But treating withdrawal-related insomnia is difficult, partly because what’s going on in the brain in this condition remains largely mysterious.

As someone in #recovery, I'll admit I'm biased on this--& it should be said that just because someone gets clean & #sober, doesn't mean their past bad behavior is excused--however, when someone has gotten long term #sobriety, it's kind of gross to me to publicly attack their past addiction issues. Not that recovery is a cure, we all still have the disease, but we're in remission, & it's being managed well. Don't shit on people working hard on their recovery just because they are in recovery.

I don't have a big boffo speech or anything to celebrate 10 years of #Sobriety from alcohol. All I really want to say is that anyone can find themselves struggling with a dependency, regardless of any personal or cultural variable. And it is not a moral failing. It is a mental aberration. It is no choice. It becomes an absence of choice.

If you are struggling with addiction, please know that you are not bad, you are not hopeless, and you are not alone. I could not have survived to make it to this point without other addicts helping me. You are not alone. Please, reach out. You are worth it.

My gratitude is boundless. My mother continues to support me every day and is a constant source of wisdom. And without my sister taking care of me for those first 6 or so years, I would never have stuck it out. All my friends and family in recovery, especially those who we've lost along the way - I honor and cherish your deeds, words and memories.

Lots of love to you all.

Long Covid can cause MCAS (mast cell activation syndrome) which gives many people alcohol intolerance.

I’m wildly allergic to alcohol and as my condition progressed I become unable to even be around open booze.

This graph shows the decline in alcohol sales in San Francisco from 2023 to 2024. Notice red wine is at the top - and it’s known to be one of the worst for those with MCAS.

That elephant in the room is trying to get your attention again! 1/2
