After a spontaneous detour to Lake Garda I reached my destination, #Verona, after dark, 231 km later. Quite fittingly it was raining when I finally got to see the famous arena, just as it rained when I embarked on this journey yesterday morning!

Most of the interesting mountain passes are still closed this time of the year so I decided to head further south today. The bike route in the Adige valley to Trento is amazing I enjoyed that part a lot.
Little traffic, no wind, going slightly downhill on an otherwise flat course in the sunshine -- I had no excuse today not to go #FullGas!

The downhill into #SouthTyrol was exhilarating. Such pleasant temperatures down here compared to the Munich cold. At #Brixen I called it a day after 223 km in the saddle and took a hotel room. Spring is cold compared to last year and doesn't allow for riding through the night yet.

The main reason I'm converting everything to tubeless is ride quality.

The difference is huge: with tubeless tires, you ride as if on silky smooth surfaces with less rolling resistance. I don't care about the puncture protection aspect: if something goes wrong – I'm in trouble in both cases anyway, as I have no repair skills and don't carry any tools with me.

Last ride of the season for 2024 — and despite it also being my first in two months (sickness), I had a decent year — 1474 km (916 miles) — about the same as 2020 and 2021, double 2022, but of course way less than last year’s 2234 km. Considering I had a concussion early in the season, appendicitis at the end, and a demanding work schedule, I should call that a huge success. So … can I commit to some serious riding in 2025?

What sad news. Manon Lloyd has left GCN. If there were any clues about her departture, I caught none of them. I only wish her the best of luck whatever her next chapter will be like.

And now I know for sure that I will watch GCN videos less often. Manon has been an excellent presenter. If it was GCN's decision to let her go, they made a HUGE mistake.

Taking parcels to the post office today I stopped by a roundabout which temporarily has "bicycle art" on it. I then cycled on to a DIY shop to buy insulation because with the removal of the gas supply last winter we need to insulate the one relatively uninsulated room which remains in our home. That room was the boiler room but as there are no longer any gas appliances in our home we can reclaim it.

We're striving to reduce our environmental footprint in every way that we can.

And why do we have "bicycle art" on all the roundabouts in Assen at the moment ? Because the Road Cycling European Championships, "the pinnacle of cycling events on our continent" are going to be here in Drenthe on 20-24th of September.

There will be five days of events in all, 1000 riders will fly in from 40 different countries to ride their bikes for a few km, accompanied the whole time by ludicrous numbers of support and press vehicles as well as a few helicopters, and then they'll fly home again.

It will be spectacular but it's also incredibly irresponsible. International sport, including cycling, has a **huge** carbon footprint. It is literally killing people and needs to stop.
