First attempt at what is called "visible mending"
Might add some extra thread to the one on top, I kinda ran out near the end and didn't feel like doing more last night.
@afreytes if the soles are ok still you could try using some silicone glue, it's crazy stuff. Or contact cement (but that will be harder to apply) #repairReuseRecycle
Today I
* stressed over a failed $51 payment and spent a while on hold trying to find out what to do about it (more #mutualaid would definitely help here)
* made more progress on the solar panel bumper (drilled holes in the wood pieces and fastened most of them together, except for the top side expansion piece that has to be cut lengthways and is taking much effort so I am cutting it a bit at a time),
* fixed my saw's (missing screw to hold on its handle) problem with a coach bolt and nut,
* made a start on chopping up the motor housing for the swing arm motor I removed from the front of the bus yesterday,
* dismantled a higgledy-piggledy ladder for its wood and screws,
* and enjoyed some nice sandwiches.
I didn't accomplish much today, but I did manage to fix my Galaxy Buds following these instructions. They suddenly became very quiet I thought they were broken. But after removing the glued in metal grates and giving them a good cleaning with isopropanol they are working fine again.
These instructions should work for similiar in-ears as well:

Not all my prints are that serious arcade repairs, I generally hate the concept of throwing away perfectly good stuff because they have minor, repairable issues. There's just insane amount of easy fixes a 3D printer can do.
This chair has lost all its little feetsies and it now damages the concrete floor paint. I printed a new set that took just minutes to model with FreeCAD.
Why are there mainly complete replacement wheels for wheelbarrows on sale when in most cases it is sufficient to change the casing and/or inner tube? I didn't want to throw away the good rim. Changing the inner tube and casing was surprisingly quick and relatively easy, even without special tools. By the way, read that you can also retrofit a tube to tubeless wheelbarrow tires if the air between the casing and rim leaks after a while. #repair #RepairReuseRecycle

So this isnt a discussion about ending food delivery. That's not realistic. My questions is what would eco-friendly, reusable, non plastic dependent food delivery look like? Reusable, standard metal containers used by restaurants with a deposit? Paper bags? How would you get it to scale?
Interested to hear everyone's thoughts

@susankayequinn ad Throwing away: I work in a #farmLife museum, beginning of the 20th century. When I guide people to our attic with broken things, off parts, or crazy collections of pieces, they roll their eyes, until I explain that they repaired their stuff with these pieces or gave pieces to friends/neighbours for repairing. "Wow, that's so modern!", they say then. #CircularEconomy ...
I do remember the first Floppotron, but i had no idea that it was in version 3 and is now a full orchestra with 512 floppy disk drives, 4 scanners and 16 hard disk drives
Thanks to @iFixit , I managed to replace the batteries in my Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds and in my OnePlus 7T phone without damaging any of the devices. The phone runs @lineageos now, so it should be good for a few more years.
Proud of myself.
@TheEddieShow It’s a quote from his old Twitter account back when we were all on the decaying bird.
Shoutout to the Patagonia outdoor clothing company. They just repaired my winter jacket for the third time (and it was not a small task to replace the front zipper).
Not only was the repair free, shipment to and from the workshop was also covered by them.
If you have Patagonia apparel or gear that can be repaired and want them to do it, visit https://eu.patagonia.com/gb/en/repairs/ to start the process (the link may be different for different geographical regions. If you end up on the homepage, search for 'repairs').
@stefan omfg I want this.
Would be great as well for days I can / have to drive, but don’t go on roads above 40 mph.
Lmk when UK available and / or some #FOSS or #homebrew #nerd #engineer #homeDIY #proactive types build something similar.
Ooh!
@Maker_of_Things
…. Is there a construction kit for electric bikes and / or scooters?
I will post pictures probably Tuesday but I recently bought a jacket from Goodwill for super cheap. It doesn't seem too threadbare, it's super cozy, and I love all the pockets.
However.
What I initially thought was just stains turned out to be slight fraying/flaking upon closer inspection. The tag says the outer shell is polyutherane (which a quick Google search tells me is the full name of PU Leather??).
When I pull the fabric, it reveals more tearing in the outer coating. Everything else about the jacket appears fine.
I'm trying to be more frugal and less wasteful. I also really like this jacket. Could anyone help give me ideas on how to mend it? I have no mending/sewing experience but I'd like to start with salvaging this jacket.
It's double layered and insulated so I don't think sewing is a good idea. I'm not sure if there's a way to treat/fix PU flaking and tearing.
My first idea is to start buying patches and apply them with fabric glue. Maybe with a repair patch underneath as proper reinforcement, then patches on top for the aesthetic. I've always wanted a battle jacket.
Does this sound okay or am I way off the mark? Or, worst case scenario, should I accept the L?
ETA: thanks to everyone boosting, but I'm leaning towards giving up the ghost and just letting nature run its course. I posted some pictures in the thread to show how bad the tearing is getting.
It's not an object of beauty and the blade isn't retractable any more, but a scrap piece from a wooden kitchen worktop made a new handle for my saw.
It took me about half an hour to make it. If your are reasonably well paid, you might say it's more economical to buy a new saw. But we can't afford that kind of attitude any more (even though I fall into that trap too sometimes).
A bit of sharpening with a triangular file and the blade was as new.
On iFixit, this is a simple two step process. Heat the glue, then pop the back off. In reality, the screen fell off first. Then the back popped off, minus the black paint/foil. That had to be peeled off in bits. The glue is still attached to the body of the phone.
@FirewallDragons I think #RightToRepair must necessitate any #RightToModify, because #RepairReuseRecycle necessitates #Upcycling and thus using #AftermarketFirmware.
Needless to say I think even that is overreach, as regulators like @BNetzA not only can but will enforce spectrum regulations and pursue violators by all legal means, so it's not as if there is a rampant flood of #SpectrumViolations amd no means to stop them - far from it.
