Some eye candy for @caseyliss

This is a (now quite old) #Grafana dashboard I knocked up using data from PiHole and my #Ubiquiti setup.

It had a practical purpose other than just eye candy… I needed to learn how to make #Grafana dashboards and design some #Observability solutions for work using Grafana, #OpenTelemetry and #timeseries databases. As we all know having a project helps you learn so this was my project a while back. It all runs in containers as well. Another excuse for a #learning opportunity.

Having fancy and (relatively) cheap networking kit to play round with at home was a great bonus

Okay, call me crazy (you might be right...) but I'm pretty excited about this. I'm looking at self hosting my own jellyfin chromecast receiver.

When you cast video, the actual webapp that loads inside your tv is hosted somewhere on the internet (it's not a built-in component running from your local jellyfin install) because it's gotta be internet facing and registered with Google (it's a whole thing for chromecast receivers in general.)

It's actually remarkably straightforward to setup a local instance of this receiver, it's just a nodejs app that'll need a HTTPS endpoint.

Next step is I need to register a new cast app and add it into my local jellyfin instance and I should be able to get it working in our tv... To what end, I hear you ask? I wanna get some kind of logging/monitoring set up so I can diagnose an issue I've been having the last week or so 🤣 I'm hoping to integrate OpenTelemetry 🔭

That's why I'm happy that @hazelweakly agreed to record the #ArchitectureWeekly podcast episode and try to bridge those two perspectives.

architecture-weekly.com/p/appl

@hazelweakly is one of the best people in the observability space. I think that she doesn't need an introduction here as one of the persons who made the Hachyderm instance operable, safe, and community-driven.

That's also where we started the episode, but we went much further! Also beyond the #OpenTelemetry

Observability is one of those words that is repeated a lot in our industry. #OpenTelemetry is mentioned almost always with it, but too often, focusing on the technical details, forgetting about the general strategy.

I think that we have decent content about technical tooling, a smaller set but also good about strategy, but we have a big gap between them.

👋 Some (not-so-fresh) news here 👋

📢 #NetObserv 1.7 for #OpenShift was released in last October

And some fresher news:
✅ The related blog post describing What's new has just been published today on Red Hat developer blog: developers.redhat.com/articles . Check it out for news about #OpenTelemetry secondary interfaces, multi-tenancy for developer teams and more...

✅ Finally, we're making something of our domain netobserv.io : you can retrieve there all our blog posts, and a bit more
