If all you're doing is backing up with no file integrity checks then you can never be sure if a file that's important to you has been corrupted, accidentally edited, or maybe even just removed. That's why file integrity checks are important to any archival system. We want to detect divergence in our file sets before we copy the corrupt file all over all of the good copies.

I set up email notifications with smtp2go and I can send an email from a shell script with curl.

So when the Indie Archive sees more than 5 lines in the file integrity log it can notify me about the reported discrepancy with the log file in the body of the email.

I just have to learn how to do that now. Include a text file in a curl command. I saw it done in a gmail example.

When you don't know why you are being notified of a breach, Tuesday edition.

Back in March, I reported on a #ransomware attack on New York Plastic Surgical Group/Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. I would later help get one of the threat actors' storage sites taken down.

Fast forward to yesterday, when to our surprise, my husband received a breach notification letter from NYPSG. Neither one of us can recall him ever being a patient of theirs for anything.

[Had I known NYPSG had his data, I would have examined the data tranche more!]

Needless to say, we have questions....

I was just reading a follow-up on the Philippine Health Insurance (PhilHealth) breach by #Medusa in 2023, and I read something that struck me as unusual:

The govt didn't pay the TA's demands but what they did do was set up a portal where citizens could check to determine if Medusa had leaked their personal identification number.

I can't recall any govt or private sector entity ever creating a portal like that before. Can you? I mean, telling people to check HaveIBeenPwnd is one thing, but to create a portal on a .gov domain to check what TAs leaked?

Some services opted in for having #email notifications without any useful content. The message just says "you have a new notification in our portal". Even without providing information where should the user go to to see said #notification.
Oftentimes those emails also contain long explanations in the footer why they are so terse, and without any links and instruct people to report any email that does not adhere to this format.
This is an absolute shambles of #UX and (ironically) opens tons of attack vectors.
Is there a way to make the UX here better, while adhering to the original smoke-and-mirrors #security checklist?
