Why the good news about the mpox outbreak of 2025 isn't really good after all
What the media doesn’t tell you about your risk in this #measles outbreak:
1- A well sealed respirator { #N95 } is needed to keep from breathing in this virus
2- If you’ve had covid, your immune system is damaged. Now any kind of infection is likely to be more severe.
3- Measles is #airborne. So is #influenza, #norovirus, #SARS2, #RSV, #tuberculosis, #monkeypox . Virus can spread in a vacant room hours after the infected person leaves. See #1 - wear an N95 / FFP2.
4- Good hygiene is always a good idea. This includes air hygiene.

On August 14, the World Health Organization declared a growing outbreak of #mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and other African countries a #global #health #emergency of international concern.
The alert marks the second time in three years that an international health emergency has been declared due to the rapid spread of the disease formerly known as #monkeypox.
The last mpox emergency designation was in July 2022, when an outbreak extended across 116 countries, impacting nearly 100,000 people, and killing about 200.
In the latest outbreak, more than 15,000 confirmed and suspected cases of mpox have been reported in Central and Western Africa along with 537 deaths
-- making the new outbreak deadlier than the one two years ago.
Yale epidemiologist #Chantal #Vogels, PhD, has been studying mpox;
and she led a team that developed novel genome sequencing approaches for viruses such as mpox to better investigate how they emerge and spread.
Vogels recently took a moment to share her thoughts on the latest mpox outbreak...

»Much has been made of the fact that many of the initial diagnoses were in sexual health clinics by gay men, not because it is primarily sexually transmitted, like HIV, but because gay men are much more attuned to unusual health issues being indicative, and are more likely to seek treatment than straight men.
In the US, this has led to women and straight men being misdiagnosed, and risks being misanalyzed. The emphasis has been on not having sex, particularly gay sex for the right. So that’s one concerning element of this - I am sure that the scripts are already being written on the right.
[…]
And it is as yet impossible to rule out the MOST concerning issue - whether the rise of monkeypox, and its rather rapid mutation in both Clades, is in any way linked to immune damage due to Covid.
That’s speculation, but a lot of people are concerned. You all remember Kaposi’s Sarcoma, a kind of skin cancer whose sudden rise to prominence was one of the things that led to the identification of the HIV virus and AIDS, right?
Sometimes, the arrival of a new disease or a disease in a new population indicates some other underlying condition. For example, we know that measles makes it more likely for up to five years that children will die of other infections. The post-viral wiping of the immune system increases the risk of death overall.
Post viral immune damage from covid means that the combination of widespread, repeat infection with covid and an immune damaged population exposed to a new to them pox virus may have more terrible consequences than previously. If so, Covid could open the door to new kinds of infections and viruses that had not been a previous problem for most of us.
Pox viruses also have immune implications, for they increase the quantity of NK (natural killer cells), but turn off their function, making them ineffective, at least in animal studies. We know that Covid also damages and causes dysfunction in NK cells, and that the two might harmonize in some troubling ways.
This last is the biggest worry I have - not that Mpox will be as prevalent as covid, but that mpox will become common in places where children have the most physical contact, and that it will have a high mortality rate due to its inherent severity in kids and possible immune dysfunction due to Covid from our high levels of transmission.
The other major concern I have is that because monkeypox takes three full weeks to heal AFTER LESIONS form, and one is highly contagious during that time, that unless we get ahead of this very soon, and provide economic support and isolation facilities for people affected, mpox could get away from us, simply because most people cannot afford to take that much time off work.«
Fear not the #monkeypox #mpox my friends, for #wehavethetools . Pimple up!

We have the tools, and it is up to the people to exercise personal responsibility to use them wisely. Trust the individual, don't hold them, or society for that matter, hostage for a contagious painful rash with more than a few chronic complications but a 90-95% survival rate.
(Not sure if I should be putting the /s anymore)

The report offers "a number of policy options that would help to reduce and address pandemic risk. Among these are: […]
• Developing and incorporating pandemic and emerging disease risk health impact assessments in major development and land-use projects, while reforming financial aid for land-use so that benefits and risks to biodiversity and health are recognized and explicitly targeted.
• Ensuring that the economic cost of pandemics is factored into consumption, production, and government policies and budgets.
• Enabling changes to reduce the types of consumption, globalized agricultural expansion and trade that have led to pandemics – this could include taxes or levies on meat consumption, livestock production and other forms of high pandemic-risk activities."

2020 saw the first global lockdown. That year the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services #IPBES convened of "an urgent virtual workshop about the links between degradation of nature and increasing pandemic risks[.] The experts agree that escaping the era of pandemics is possible, but that this will require a seismic shift in approach from reaction to prevention."
The outcomes outlined in the workshop report were neither discussed nor approved by the IPBES plenary. [grr]

Smallpox was eradicated in the 1970s. Vaccination campaigns ceased. So people under fifty are not immune to #mpox.
Rapid treatment reduces lethality from 10% to 1%.
Mining for electricity transition is particularly conducive to the creation and export of new diseases. #Syndemics can be defined as optimal social and ecological environment for generating and propelling epidemics.

Mpox (monkeypox) is an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It can cause painful blisters, swollen lymph nodes, and fever, the DGHS said in a press release today (17 August).
What we know:
1. Mpox was first identified in monkeys in Denmark in 1958
2. WHO said that the disease has already spread to Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, Sweden and Kenya
3. It was detected in Pakistan for the first time on Thursday
4. The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared the ongoing mpox outbreak in Africa a global health emergency, the highest level of alarm under international health law
5. A deadlier strain of the virus, clade Ib, is spreading quickly in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has reached at least four previously unaffected countries in Africa
6. Mpox is a viral disease related to the now-eradicated smallpox virus
7. Some outbreaks of clade I mpox have killed up to 10% of people who get sick, although more recent outbreaks have had lower death rates
8. The fatality rate for clade II is less than 0.2%
9. Infants, people with severely weakened immune systems and pregnant women – are more likely to have more severe infections
What are the symptoms?
Surveillance of mpox is quite incomplete, and there's much more to learn. But there are some ways to identify it.
1. fever, headache, chills
2. joint pains, backache, muscle aches
3. Swollen lymph nodes
4. Extreme tiredness
5. Onset of rash, 1-5 days after fever
Is there treatment?
Currently, there is no treatment for mpox but some antiviral drugs are being tested.
1. The only vaccine is said to be stockpiled by Western countries
2. One advice is to 'go back to basics of hygiene
3. Avoid contact with those who are displaying symptoms
4. See a doctor if symptoms appear

Greatest hope for mankind at this juncture of disease denial is athletes & actors getting virulent pustular monkeypox and it being televised in high definition so it cant be denied.
Because thats about the only thing - visceral, nauseating, aversive conditioning - that
is slowing anyone down after COVID & the Olympics.

May this next crisis ease. Be it mpox (#MonkeyPox), violence in the workplace (#India having the biggest protests most recently), ongoing burnout from COVID, more... Good luck.
It takes two years to normalize from a crisis: for recovery from burnout, for organizations to collectively reset and for things to be prepared for the next crisis. I'm not sure folks know this.
