OK, here’s the answer to turning off “Smart Replies” in Messages on macOS, courtesy of the ever-wonderful Ricky Mondello (who you should follow; I won’t @ them here because I don’t want to spam them as their post about this was followers-only):

System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Input Sources (Edit) > Show suggested replies

This appears to be a new setting 👏

You know what someone needs to make? An app on #Windows that syncs into the #Mac #Messages app itself (not icloud), so you can send and receive iPhone messages from a Windows PC. The Phone Link app doesn't work worth a damn. And you can't hook into msgs via icloud.com either which is doubly weird. I'm so used to send/rcv messages via the Mac that not having the feature on Windows is.. OH NO whatta meesa turning into?! 😦

There needs to be a specific option to turn off these “Smart Replies” in Messages. Every single one of them so far has been terrible – out of context, missing the point, etc.

I’d love to see the reactions from friends and family if I used any one of the suggested replies. They would be very confused/offended.

Also, if you ask Siri how to turn them off, it gives you an incorrect answer about turning off message summaries.

There are only a few people that I need to regularly text message that haven't moved to Signal - I'm hoping at some point I can persuade them on there.

In the meantime, I've installed Textra to replace Google's Messages app. I'm not bothered about security with this one - it's only SMS.
