Frantic 🇬🇧 + 🇪🇺<p>So after 32 years of good experience of updating firmware and BIOS on various kit I have updated the BIOS on my own PC. That sense of trepidation of an unexpected failure when the system reboots is still there.<br>It worked so I installed the new RAM, I now have 32GB.<br>My PC is 6 years old and fails the Win11 compatibility tests but I have tweaked the install of 23H2 so that it runs. This was done so I could play a game that didn't run on Linux. A game that now will run on Linux and was tested for 5 hours.<br>Next steps are to wipe the Windows disk and just run Win11 in a VM. Then in a few months change from Linux Mint to Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 when it's released.<br>Between now and the LMDE7 release I want to rebuild my Raspberry Pi NAS.</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/RaspberryPi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RaspberryPi</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/LinuxMint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxMint</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/LinuxMintDebianEdition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxMintDebianEdition</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Windows11" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Windows11</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Technology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Technology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tech</span></a></p>
Charlotte Aten<p>In 2021 I bought a small Chinese ultrabook, the One Netbook A1. You can find a review at <a href="https://liliputing.com/one-netbook-a1-handheld-computer-preview/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">liliputing.com/one-netbook-a1-</span><span class="invisible">handheld-computer-preview/</span></a> and the official site for the company appears to be <a href="http://1netbook.com" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">http://</span><span class="">1netbook.com</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>. I wanted a small computer with USB ports so I could teach a hybrid course with a USB webcam pointed at the blackboard.</p><p>It was a bit hard to get the One Netbook A1. Despite positive Western reviews, no American company was selling it anymore, and I couldn't order it directly from the the PRC. I had to use a European intermediary in order to obtain it. I would joke that the ultrabook had the PRC's version of our NSA's spyware built in, so I wasn't supposed to have it. In any case, it worked well for my purposes and I had fun using it over the next couple years.</p><p>I was letting the machine collect dust for a while, and I finally decided to give it new life by switching it from Linux Mint to Linux Mint Debian Edition. When I did so, I found that (again) the screen wanted to be in tablet mode and I couldn't get it to switch through the Display menu. I had an applet that solved this before, but it was no longer available. I ended up writing my own script for switching screen layouts quickly. In the process, I found <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/GPDPocket/comments/krgijw/linux_on_the_one_netbook_a1/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">reddit.com/r/GPDPocket/comment</span><span class="invisible">s/krgijw/linux_on_the_one_netbook_a1/</span></a> which says that the Reddit One Netbook community is «banned». Maybe my joke was more right than I thought?</p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/OneNetbook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OneNetbook</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/ultrabook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ultrabook</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/OneNetbookA1" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OneNetbookA1</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/LinuxMint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxMint</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/LinuxMintDebianEdition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxMintDebianEdition</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/LinuxMintDE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxMintDE</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/NSA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NSA</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/security" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>security</span></a></p>

raymoo the HomoGaymoo<p>friends do you know if a windows 7 CHKDSK process can mess with a linux mint DE install or with files saved on a computer?</p><p>i'm trying to log in to a windows partition of an old laptop with a dead monitor. i think the second to last option on the boot screen is the windows option but it's taking a long time to load. i think this is because the CHKDSK process is running (before the laptop screen died i would see that process and cancel it)</p><p><a href="https://sauropods.win/tags/windows" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>windows</span></a> <a href="https://sauropods.win/tags/windows7" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>windows7</span></a> <a href="https://sauropods.win/tags/linuxmint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linuxmint</span></a> <a href="https://sauropods.win/tags/linuxmintdebianedition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linuxmintdebianedition</span></a></p>
allyngibson<p>I've been driving <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/LinuxMintDebianEdition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxMintDebianEdition</span></a> for a few days, and it's been solid for what I need.</p><p>I haven't set up my shortcuts to automatically open certain applications on certain workspaces, as I do on <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/LinuxMint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxMint</span></a> 21.2, but I will in the next day or two.</p><p>It's also pretty. So, so pretty! :)</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/lmde6" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lmde6</span></a></p>
allyngibson<p>It's still a Beta release, but I installed <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/LinuxMintDebianEdition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxMintDebianEdition</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/lmde6" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lmde6</span></a> anyway. I recreated my Mint 21.2 layout, though using the default Mint icons and themes. Mint is just so pretty.</p><p>Thus far, it's been fine. I can access the work VPN, the remote desktop runs. It's Mint.</p>
