Lightning strikes the Earth about 3,000,000 times a day, so you'd think we'd have the science of lightning all figured out. In fact, it's an active area of research. The more scientists learn about how lightning strikes form inside storm clouds, the more mysterious this natural phenomenon gets sciencefocus.com/planet-earth/ #Physics #Lightning #Atmosphere

BBC Science Focus Magazine · One of Earth's oldest mysteries keeps getting weirderDespite centuries of research, one of Earth’s most awe-inspiring phenomena is still not fully understood.

⚡️Lightning

What do you think of storms? I personally like them very much ☺️ I enjoy watching the lightning flash & hearing the thunder roll across the sky, and the rain always feels so refreshing against my skin!

What do you like to do when it rains?

#Lightning strikes usually kill #trees. This one just grows stronger npr.org/2025/04/11/nx-s1-53574

"The lightning's power cleanses these trees of parasitic #vines. It also zaps trees nearby, reducing competition. Dipteryx oleifera, a towering presence in #Panama's forests, is particularly adept at thriving after enduring events that are deadly to most other trees."

“A Migration Story”
Last week near Kearney, Nebraska on the Platte River with the migrating sandhill cranes (about 700,00 in this area when I was there). I was overnighting in a blind when this storm approached from the west.

"Storm clouds generate massive electrical potentials...but nowhere is the electric field strong enough to ionize the air and start a miles-long branching bolt. Something needs to create the initial spark...

Using precise radio-wave detection in three dimensions, scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory have determined that the sparks are provided by cosmic rays...atomic-scale particles traveling at incredible speeds..."

Looked like a normal tree until I walked around the side. I’m guessing it’s a lightning strike from long ago that the tree has been doing its best to recover from, but it's a large gap to bridge, going from the ground all the way up 20 feet or more.
Second photo of multiple trees in another area of woods that had a lightning strike within a week of my photo, illustrating what this tree had to deal with.
