Around half of the world's 7,000 languages are expected to be extinct by the end of this century. Five Books spoke to author Samantha Ellis about why this matters, and got five book recommendations from her on the subject. "With language go stories. Yes, you can translate those stories and tell them in a different language, but there is often something vibrant lost. With a language goes a sort of vibe, a style, a mode of speaking. So I do think it quite devastating that so many languages will be lost," she says.

I have discovered that I can speak grammatically incorrect, vocabulary-deficient French, really quite well! Actually proud of myself for having the courage to talk with native speakers even knowing I'm making mistakes.

AP News · 'Skibidi' and other slang terms added to the Cambridge DictionaryThe Cambridge Dictionary has added over 6,000 new words including slang terms like “skibidi,” pronounced SKIH-bih-dee, "tradwife" and "delulu." Cambridge Dictionary says it uses the Cambridge English Corpus database of more than 2 billion words to monitor how new words are used, how often and in what contexts. “Skibidi” comes from a viral YouTube series and can mean "cool" or "bad." "Tradwife" refers to a traditional wife who shares her lifestyle online. "Delulu" is short for delusional. Other additions this year include "mouse jiggler" for a tool to simulate activity during remote work and “forever chemical” for persistent environmental pollutants.

The similarities to today are striking:
-Germany occupied parts of a sovereign nation, basing their claims on a #language spoken by a minority.
-Like Ukraine, #Czechoslovakia ’s defenses were strongest on the regions given to Hitler.
-”#SecurityGuarantees” for Czechoslovakia weren’t worth the paper they were written on, and #WW2 started a year later.
