If this doesn't get folks out onto the streets, I don't know what will! #StudentLoans are a HUGE burden that hangs over a lot of peoples' heads -- and #IncomeDrivenRepayment programs are the only thing keeping them from not being able to make ends meet and / or having their #credit ruined! And taxes on scholarships? Seems the #FascistGrooveThing wants to #SilenceDissent by providing barriers against an #EducatedVoter!

House Republicans mull taxes on scholarships and changes to student loan programs

By CHEYANNE MUMPHREY

"As Republicans in Congress look for ways to slash spending, some legislators are floating new taxes on college #scholarships, an end to #StudentLoan #repayment plans and a big hike in taxes on university endowments.

"The ideas affecting #HigherEducation are among many in circulation among House committees that are exploring ways to cover the cost of extending and expanding tax cuts passed in President Donald Trump’s first term.

"The recommendations are still evolving, and it’s unclear how close any of them will get to being implemented. Regardless, advocates across higher education say they are alarmed to see such proposals gain traction at all with Republicans.

"'It’s shocking to me because this amount of cuts is not happening in reaction to like a budget crisis, like a #recession. This really feels different in the sense that it is not something that there is an external push or a need for. So, it feels more #ideological in a way,' said Jessica Thompson, a higher education policy expert with The Institute for College Access and Success.

"Here is a look at possible federal budget cuts that would affect higher education under the Trump administration:

"Cutting programs that help students pay off college debt

"The U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce has suggested several possible ways to overhaul student loan programs. Some would reduce student access to federal aid for college.

"On the chopping block potentially are several plans students can opt into to repay their students loans, including the #SAVEPlan introduced by the Biden administration. That plan doesn’t require borrowers to make payments if they earn less than 225% of the federal poverty line — $32,800 a year for a single person — and prevents interest from adding to balances as long as borrowers make their monthly payments. The SAVE plan was already put on hold after Republicans challenged it. Some plans do not appear to be targeted, including one that caps loan payments based on borrowers’ income level.

[...]

"An end to tax-free status for scholarships

"Scholarships and fellowships have been exempt from taxes as long as they are used for tuition and related expenses. That would change under another proposal that’s up for consideration.

"The changes could create new financial burdens for students and families, advocates say.

"'There’s been great progress in bringing down the costs of higher education. Adjusted for inflation, public university tuition is less now than it was ten years ago,' said Craig Lindwarm, senior vice president of governmental affairs with the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. 'But as we look at some of the proposals that are options, many would increase costs on students and families, and I think (the proposals) are heading in the direction that most don’t want to see, which is increasing expenses on students and families.'

#toxicidealism on the #left is as bad a phenomenon as #MAGA on the #right

and equally prone to #manipulation by #geopolitical #trollfarm

with MAGA the manipulation is to champion #bigotry and make the #bigot feel safe

with the left the #psyop game is to demand absolute #ideological #purity in high holy fire and brimstone fury, and use that emotional high to detach, alienate, not #vote

and lose

in reality

which is what matters

@mloxton @KathyLK

no

not voting has no blame in the minds of some on the #left

because their personal feeling about themselves is more important than mattering in the world

so voting for a #candidate they feel is impure is so terrible, they don't #vote, then the #right wins

that's #toxidealism in a nutshell:

people whose personal sense of their #ideological purity, how they feel about themselves, is more important than messy impure strategy to get effective change in the world

@ohunt @KathyLK

yup

for many, a personal sense of #ideological purity is more important than effective, imperfect, change

their hearts are in the right place, but their minds are AWOL

they can't bring themselves to #vote for someone who they sense is impure

the effect is the #right grows stronger

i don't know how to tell people on the #left that:

they aren't abandoning their principles, they are recognizing that strategy matters to get positive change in this world

@obscurestar @KathyLK

the #right hacks many #psychological weaknesses

blame shifting is a big one

it's unfortunate many on the #left also fall for the trick

out of some misguided sense of anger on the ideologically impure, while the outright malicious are met with silence

the #political effect is obvious and real and strong, and they don't know or care

the left really needs to come to grips with the fact that constant #ideological purity inquisitions kills the left

When taking into account #visual #communication,
the online debate around #climate #change is characterized by the presence of #echo #chambers
with only a small fraction of content circulating among both climate activists and climate skeptics.

In cases where the same visual content circulates within the two groups,
the emotional reactions are often opposed,
with reactions that are more defined by the pre-existing climate #ideological #alignment
than with an actual engagement with the content.

“The thing with for-profit companies is, well, they need to make a profit. Not only that, but their main purpose is to maximize profit and the “value” they generate for their shareholders. [I]f your incentive as a company is to maximize profit and grow huge to make your VCs their #money back, you will start rationalizing away your #ideological points one by one over #time.”

When the Soviets called their enemies “#fascists,” they turned the word into a meaningless insult. Putinist #Russia has preserved the habit: a “fascist” is anyone who opposes the wishes of a Russian #dictator. So Ukrainians defending their country from Russian invaders are “fascists.” This is a trick that #Trump has copied. He, like Vladimir #Putin, refers to his enemies as “fascists,” w/no #ideological significance at all. It is simply a term of opprobrium.

The next president will also alter the courts’ #racial, #ideological & #professional makeup. Under #Trump, 76% of judicial nominees were #men, & 84% were #white…. Many had ties to the #FederalistSociety, a *#conservative* #legal group. #Biden’s appointees have been 63% #female & 61% #nonwhite. He has prioritized nominees who served as #PublicDefenders & #CivilRights lawyers, & his picks have tended to be more #liberal than those of past Democratic presidents.

"One of life's most underappreciated talents is to know when it's time to move on to life's next chapter," he said in prepared remarks obtained by The AP. "So I stand before you today...to say that this will be my last term as #Republican leader of the #Senate."
His decision punctuates a powerful #ideological transition underway in the #RepublicanParty, from #RonaldReagan's brand of traditional #conservatism & strong international #alliances, to the fiery, often #isolationist #populism of Trump.

"It may seem positive that Islam is being discussed by former detractors beyond the prisms of #extremism and #terrorism, but this exchange is part of a growing trend of something more ominous that involves #ideological borrowing in both directions.

The language of the #incel “red pill” #movement has been translated into Arabic, and its #terminology can be found in Arabic #chat rooms and on other #websites.

Conversely, conservative #male pundits in the West are hosting #Muslim voices on their #podcasts and #shows.

And while these #groups have historically been at loggerheads, the overlaps in their values are also clear in their opposition to #feminism and the #antisemitism that is rife in both #communities."

New Lines Magazine · How Andrew Tate and the Far Right Made Common Cause with IslamistsWestern far-right personalities are carving out a new form of conservatism, characterized by an admiring attitude to Islam. Growing unity between conservative Muslims and Christians, and between disaffected young men in both the West and the Middle East, may yet have significant effects on U.S. electoral politics and foreign policy.

"Understanding and combatting #misinformation across 16 countries on six continents" out today in Nature Human Behavior! There have been a huge number of msinfo-related studies in the past 5 or so years, but almost all of them have been US/Western populations. So here we examined the #psychology of #misinformation, and the effectiveness of various #interventions, across 16 countries (total N=34k).

We find:
➤Consistent #cognitive, #social & #ideological predictors of misinfo belief across countries
➤Interventions (accuracy prompts, digital literacy tips, using crowdsourcing to identify misinfo) are all broadly effective across countries
