@carnage4life My central heating is controlled by a local-only temperature sensor, a local-only smart relay, some local-only TRVs, and #HomeAssistant . I don't *think* anyone can shut it down.

BTW the decades old electromechanical thermostat that this gear bypasses is still made.

For tomorrow I will have to implement a new rule in my #homeassistant. Electricity price becomes so negative that it will even compensate transport and taxes, so instead of just throttling the solar inverter I need to switch it off and then use as much electricity as possible.

One of the really great things about HomeKit, from Apple, is that it is a commercially supported way to do local control of devices across your LAN. I have devices that are commercial (VELUX skylight open/close device). I join it to my network, activate HomeKit on it, activate HomeKit on my HomeAssistant system, and now the #HomeAssistant can control it. No internet nor Apple devices, nor Apple services are required.

I proved this point last labor day by putting a shovel through the fiber optic that runs to my house. 😬 I could still control my devices, even without internet!

They can’t take that away from me. (Have to make sure things don’t automatically update their firmware, or else they CAN take that away from me)

Some time back I asked "where's the cop show in which the smart home logs provide useful evidence?"

Turns out it's an episode of Annika where the smart fridge says what bottle was removed from it at what time, and they knew whose favourite drink that was.

Previously I had 3 eufy smart plugs controlling some lamps in our house, the app has become unreliable so I've replaced them with Tapo ones (which are much more hackable).

I've therefore been having fun trying to unpick how the plugs work, not yet completely worked it all out but will write it up soon.

I'd be interested if anyone else either has eufy smart plugs or have an interest in understanding how they work and perhaps how they could be made more 'independent' 😜

I'm a bit mad because it's a perfectly fine device from the user perspective but I've certainly gotten this thing to pay for itself several times over in this time.

I doubt that it will happen but I hope that Google does the right thing and provides an easy path for people to put their own firmware on the device. It would work just fine as a #HomeAssistant powered thing.

Guess it's time for a new #introduction, post instance move.

Hi! I'm Crabbypup, or just 'crabby', though only in name most days.

I'm a Linux flavored computer toucher from Kitchener-Waterloo.

I tend to share stuff about the region, Open source software in general and #linux in specific.

I like to tinker in my #homelab, where I run #proxmox, #ceph, and a bunch of other #selfhosted services including #homeassistant.

I'm a rather inconsistent poster, but I'm glad to be here.
