I have a question, Mastodonians!

In English, city night be referenced using the preposition "of", and the first letter of the city doesn't affect the preposition.

- city of Ottawa
- city of Kitchener

But in French the preposition gets contracted if the first letter is a vowel (or sometimes an "h"?):

- ville d'Ottawa
- ville de Kitchener

What are examples in other languages (that use the Latin alphabet) that have the behaviour that written French does?

@feather1952 IMO peeps are having the entirely wrong reaction to this article. I mean, c'mon... tax, politics, wedges, Shit1 vs Shit2... all so very bland & meh.

Why has nobody else seemingly also spotted THE central salient issue with this article, that throws all else into a deep shade?

It’s only real item of note was a $420 increase in the $1,080 low-middle income tax offset (LMITO) that bizarrely went from $420 to $0 the moment you earned a dollar over $125,999.

It's. 😲 🤯😱

That's it. I'm totes over Mr Jericho, until & unless i receive a personally hand-crafted letter of acknowledgement & apology. Begone to The Naughty Corner, ol' mate Greggie.

In 1803, Johan Werfel published a grammar of Danish that was supposedly "for women". It was also both "practical and theoretical".

I digitized the book for the @internetarchive and wrote something about the book for #Lingoblog [In Danish]. I'll try to summarize the most interesting points here! I was curious about what it meant that it was "for women" (besides a general interest in reading old grammar books) 🧵

You've probably been told you should write in active voice, but do you know why? And do you know how to identify it?

Active voice puts the person or thing doing something front and center — and that actually improves reading comprehension. If you want people to understand what you're writing (and who doesn't?), active voice helps!

A great trick for testing if a sentence is in passive voice is to see if you can add "by zombies" to the end ... 🧵
