@linuxer @stormii @karl_ist_super ja, sowas wie @monocles / #monoclesChat, @gajim / #gajim & @delta / #deltaChat...

Whining about MS Windows

The situation of #Jabber on #MSWindows is dissatisfactory. Some people do understandably prefer a proper application over the web browser. Then there are two half-baked options:

#Dino by @dino: Unofficial, outdated build. No message reactions, no message replies, no audio widget for voice messages, AFAIK no MUC-MAM and no tray icon.

#Gajim by @gajim: Official build, even in the MS store, only slightly outdated, but no A/V calls, AFAIK no tray icon.

This is an expecially good time to be around #XMPP
#profanity and #poezio were recently updated, while #gajim (and soon #converse.js) got a new major release. These are all #XMPP clients, if you're not familiar with those names: first 2 are console-based, while gajim is a desktop client and converse.js is a web client.
Even #Movim (web client) will have another big release soon, supporting #audio #video #calls and #screensharing.. Want to give it a go? 😊

@tk My #prosody 0.12.5 server also can't do reactions in chatrooms - #XMPP clients are #Conversations and #Gajim. There is a claim that Prosody supports XEP-0421 here:
prosody.im/doc/xeplist
...ever since 0.12, but it's not enabled/installed by default, as stock-installed on #Debian 12 (from the backport for 0.12.5).

Note: XEP-0421 is absent from this page:

prosody.imXMPP Extensions (XEPs) supported in Prosody – Prosody IM

@kkarhan @delta @monocles @gajim I have to say I'm enjoying using #Deltachat as my email client, just because it feels similar to the apps I already *also* use (like #Signal, WhatsApp, #Gajim, #Conversations). There's less mental "friction" owing to that familiarity of user interface. It sucks that virtually no one else I (regrettably) still email (they still just love, love, love those free-enough-seeming, "encryption-challenged" gmail addresses) can find an email provider supporting autocrypt... but that lowering of mental friction from Deltachat _alone_ is feeling "worth it".

While I highly appreciate #Thunderbird for its calendar and addressbook (precious CalDAV/CardDAV support), the UI is so "busy" in comparison.

Gajim 2.0.0 has been released 🎉

Gajim migrated its user interface toolkit to GTK 4, which brings performance improvements and sets the ground for great features to follow. ⏩

Additionally, this release brings improved image previews, better tools for fighting spam, and much more.

All of these changes were only possible by touching a lot of Gajim’s code base, and we appreciate all the feedback we got from you. ❤️

My grandmother recently got locked out of #WhatsApp because her phone broke, and the spare one we had on hand is one WhatsApp has decided is too old to run on 💀

Fortunately, #XMPP has no such qualms! She's currently keeping up with the family group chat on #Quicksy while others of us use #Conversations, #DinoIM, and #Gajim. (Of course, extended family and friends are another matter 😔)

This serves as a reminder that closed apps may close you out—but open protocols have your back forever! :xmpp:
