Tutoring for STEM Majors<p>Functions: Adding and&nbsp;Subtracting</p><p>Functions: Adding and SubtractingIn this video I discuss adding and subtracting functions.Here we look at finding (f + g) (x) as well as ( f - g ) (x) and (f - g)(4).I show how to simplify and evaluate all of the functions after combining.This would be a topic one would see early on in an Algebra or PreAlgebra class. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/algebra" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>algebra</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/functions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>functions</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/functionsandlimits" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>functionsandlimits</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/maths" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>maths</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mathematicslesson" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mathematicslesson</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/compositionoffunctions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>compositionoffunctions</span></a></p><p><a href="https://authorjonathandavid.com/college-algebra/functions-adding-and-subtracting/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">authorjonathandavid.com/colleg</span><span class="invisible">e-algebra/functions-adding-and-subtracting/</span></a></p>

Here's an excellent example of the problems that I have with *some* mathematical terminology.

Let's say you have y=f(x). The possible values that x can take is called the domain of the function f. The possible values that y can take is called the range of the function.

Right off the bat, my #ActuallyAutistic brain has to do extra work to remember that the word domain refers to the function's input, and that the word range refers to the function's output.

If it were left to me, I'd be calling the domain, the input range, and the range, the output range, but nobody consulted me. (I suppose I wasn't born yet when mathematicians picked those terms.)

It is already aggravating, but it gets even more vexing when you run into math software that does not use the right terminology. Look at the screenshot below. The little "[blank] <= x <= [blank]" is not a range, it is a domain! Why couldn't they use the proper terminology?????

(For the record, there's a "Specify Range" button there that you have to click to add the constraints on x. It changes to "Remove Range" when the "range" is displayed.)
