Taffer 🇨🇦 :godot:<p>I've pre-ordered a Framework 12 for my wife, because she's irritated with her MacBook Air almost daily. I'll put Linux Mint on it if she goes through with the order, which will make her life easier (and let her play her Steam games). It might even replace the iPad whose battery is starting to die, depending on how good the FW12's battery is while playing video.</p><p>The MacBook Air will basically pay for the Framework 12 when we resell it. 🥳 </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/framework12" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>framework12</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/framework" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>framework</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/macbookair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>macbookair</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/linuxmint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linuxmint</span></a></p>

Cassander<p>For fellow USians, it looks like <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@frameworkcomputer" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>frameworkcomputer</span></a></span> opened up the 12 pre-orders a little earlier than expected. Now's the time to jump if you want one. <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/FrameworkLaptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkLaptop</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/framework12" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>framework12</span></a> <a href="https://frame.work/laptop12" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">frame.work/laptop12</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
the magnificent rhys<p>Sage green <a href="https://mastodon.rhys.wtf/tags/Framework12" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Framework12</span></a> preordered, in batch 1 shipping in July :)</p><p>Bit spennier than I hoped for at £864 with my chosen config, but it's still a cool machine and I'm happy to go for it.</p>
mxk<p>I sadly have to say, now that its specs, price and preorder are online, there is little going for the <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Framework12" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Framework12</span></a> - its not as cheap as some might have hoped after all, and its biggest factor is, that it has upgradable ram and higher ram limit than the affordable Lenovo Thinkpad 2in1/Yoga models.</p><p>But you still don't get thunderbolt and as we already knew, the CPUs are old ULP Intel cpus.<br>Not sure I would want that to be my next laptop.</p>

@bastetfurry @janet_catcus the only thing cooler would be if they did a #transparent version, but I also know why they didn't and instead chose said muted colour pallet: As those are easily sourceable, child-safe (if not medical- or food-grade), and available as recycling plastics. Also said colours don't directly show ABS's yellowing under sunlight that distinctively.

Keeping costs down, compared to the high prices of optically clear, non-discoloured plastic ehich also tends to be more brittle, and also may not be an option due to the way they pulled a "#ThinkPadnium" style metal reinforcement of the chassis, as they clearly worked out a mix of elastic deformation (TPU), lightweight flexing and stiffening is the way to make a machine that is more forgiving in terms of abuse without designing it to be an unwieldy, heavy industrial appliance.

So yeah, I do want to see @frameworkcomputer release the #Framework12 and maybe some compact #Desktop case that is essentially allowing to shove a Framework 12 or #Framework13 mainboard and keyboard in and have a low-footprint unit like the #RaspberryPi #Pi400 & #Pi500 units. Or just some case one can bolt onto #VESA mounts at a screen (similar to a #ThinkStation Tiny / #ThinkCentre Tiny) and use those for #Classrooms.

I hope they have some nice #Stylus slot & lanyard option similar to the #X230Tablet I still daily-drive today.

@bastetfurry @janet_catcus @frameworkcomputer not to mention whilst tooling up for reinforced plastic is more expensive than CNC'ing aluminium or get that sheetmetal-pressed, the cost per unit goes down way easier as said plastic parts are less abrasive to tools and one set of shells can be used to injection-mould several thousand cases at a higher speed, reducing tge time and space needed per unit.

  • Also mind you the replacement parts prices will OFC be higher than the cost of manufacturing, cuz every "FRU" or "CRU" on it's own generates a new SKU to inventory and manage, whereas just combining multiples to make a "#Framework12" unit is not adding much.

OFC I do expect this thing, which is basically a modern spin on the "#IntelClassmate" #Laptop to not have extreme high-end and be designed with a specific price point in mind.

  • Propably do a rubbery keyboard and better ingress protection to make it more viable for handibg out to schoolchildren.

Add to it that Framework isn't #Quanta, #Clevo or #Foxconn and we ain't talking #MacBook margins, but given they didn't release specs nor MSRP but are eager to get #bulk orders from #education customers, that seems the trajectory they're going.

  • Shurely they could easy do a "€299" offering with an N100, 128GB NVMe & 8GB RAM if one were to order like 10.000 and pay upfront, but I do expect them to rather go with like a N300 instead so these devices ain't dead slow and can survive 6 years of 8x5 use in an elementary/middle school setting.
