During my presentation at the recently concluded FOSS Backstage 2025, I highlighted how internet shutdowns are a significant barrier to the adoption of open source software in Africa.

We urgently need innovative solutions to address this issue and foster a more conducive environment for open source growth.

👉 @polexa gave a lightning talk about the history of public infrastructure like sewer systems. He drew parallels to open source, which is also invisible and often taken for granted. He concluded with a call to treat digital infrastructure with the same importance and with a similarly pivotal role for government.

All done! I'll share the recording once it's ready.

Thanks #FOSSBackstage for hosting this talk! It's the first time I've given it and I'm looking forward to iterating on it and improving it. If you know of any conferences, meetups, groups, etc who'd like to hear a version of it, LMK.

There was a ton of stuff I had to cut from the talk which I'll be posting about here and on my website relational-tech.com over the next few weeks.

Enjoy your coffee break, #FOSSBackstage stagehands! I'm sipping a homemade latte over here in DC.

When the conference resumes, I'll be giving a talk, "Relationship Problems In Open Source", about how we can view some of the most common #FOSS challenges, such as burnout, onboarding, funding, and UX, through a relational lens.

If you want a sneak peek you can check out the slides here: relational-tech.com/misc/Relat
