Hello there!
I'm Iris, and I'm a folk singer-songwriter.
I love escaping into nature, whether it's through hiking or taking my camera out to discover the little worlds we miss when we move too quickly.
My music touches on themes of the forest, religious trauma, and femininity, so if any of that resonates with you, please join my little coven. We'll explore and heal together :)
Back to normal this week with, uh, eleven streams instead of 14...Daily Tik Toks! Hosting Hambones on Tuesday! Singing about Fools on Youtube! We're gonna finish Yakuza 3 on Friday! Come say hi! #music #liveStreaming #guitar #folkMusic #yakuza #singerSongwriter #progFolk #musicProduction #openmic
Well who knows how much longer you’ll be able to buy and download American folk/protest songs from the Smithsonian, so now might be a good time to grab them if they aren’t already available from your local library and you aren’t comfortable with torrenting.
Side note: If the Fediverse were to have a theme song, might I recommend Barbara Dane’s “I Hate the Capitalist System”?

In the essential folk music book, "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down," there is a story about Cambridge MA folkies traveling and coming upon a Southern country fair. The musician playing at the time was Doc Watson. One of the Cambridge guys couldn't believe he had never heard of someone this talented. He asked where else does Watson play. The answer was, He doesn't play anywhere else ... he's blind. The Harvard Square folkies then helped put Doc on the road and in front of diverse, appreciative audiences. I heard him sing to an audience of over 3,000 at the University of Maine. He showed that he was well grounded in traditional material but was not at all afraid to perform the latest songs. Too bad Guitar Pilgrim hasn't released a video about Doc's picking style. He has done nearly everyone else. It seems to me I've seen a video of Tommy Emmanuel presenting how to play "Doc's Guitar." Doc and Merle were really amazing.

You know how it is, when you do something a little traditional and a little experimental, and you love it but wonder if anybody will get it? Well, that's how I felt about this EP, and I am over the absolute moon to know that folks get it. I feel seen.
It's here if you want to give it a spin:

Today I realized I had this recording in the vault (guess I'm starting to develop a vault, yay). It was previously only available one #BandcampFriday back in 2020. Well it's here forever now! Please enjoy my favorite love song of the 90s, courtesy of The Magnetic Fields. You know it, you love it: The Book of Love.

Apparently today is #MusiciansDay? That's cool.
If you'd like an #introduction to my music, here's my most popular song. :)
I tend toward retro-tinged #folkMusic, but my tastes are eclectic, and I hope it shows. Themes of #MentalHealth, #politics, and #spirituality come up often in my songs.
I love connecting with other #queer, #trans, #disabled, and otherwise kind folks here, so please reach out!

Hey if you happen to have access to BBC Radio 3, you might want to point your ears towards In Tune starting IMMINENTLY where we'll be in the studio doing some songs!
Do you need a half hour break from thoughts? Try shanty! Quiet that internal monologue with a timeless selection of songs! No talking, guaranteed!

Had a good music session last night - our usual small core of free-reed instruments being supplemented by a low whistler, a guitarist and a banjo player; the latter two did a couple of “old time” songs, while the former encouraged us into a brief and enjoyable Northumbrian spree. And of course I took my new smallpipes, which went down well.
I’m looking forward to a get-together to play in the park on Easter Monday ahead of our next regular gathering on the last Tuesday night in April already.
If you’re in or near #BedfordUK and play folk music you should come along - message me for details!

What a beautiful piece of #music
inspired by the story of Bevis, who the LA-based composer, Robinton Hobbs, became familiar with in his childhood.

All Aglow is a track on his new album, February Mountain.

I got the idea today that it's time to do more instrumental meditation music. Here's today's musical meditation.

Elija Wald’s book on Dylan’s “Newport” show is good
Wish I could find an article with a quote from Steve Albini or Bob Mold or somebody about all the punk rockers going acoustic, “Did I miss a memo?”
Pete Seeger said everybody was playing electric as soon as they used microphones
Which is the reason you could hear vocals over big bands — electricity had already changed pop music
(And guitars are easier to mic so the #FolkMusic revival betrayed the #accordion
Anyone know where I can read about the phenomenon of folk musicians going electric? I used to think it was much ado about nothing, but I think there's something there.
Messing about with what was originally a #telespringar beat that got out of hand, originally to check if I was able to sync the #sonicpotionslxr drum machine and #korgvolcabass to traditional #asynchronousrhythms Now I can't even find the one in this beat
Today in Labor History March 25, 1947: A coal mine exploded in Centralia, Illinois killing 111. American folksinger Woody Guthrie wrote and recorded a song about the Centralia disaster called “The Dying Miner.”
