A far-right group that claimed credit for the arrest of a Palestinian activist and permanent US resident who the Trump administration is seeking to deport-- claims it has submitted “thousands of names” for similar treatment.

"Betar US" is one of a number of rightwing, so called "pro-Israel" groups
that are supporting the administration’s efforts to deport international students involved in university pro-Palestinian protests,
an effort that escalated this week with the arrest of #Mahmoud #Khalil, an activist who recently completed his graduate studies at Columbia University.

This week, Donald Trump said Khalil’s arrest was
just “the first of many to come”.
#BetarUS quickly claimed credit on social media for providing Khalil’s name to the government.

Betar, 💥which has been labelled an extremist group by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a Jewish advocacy group,
said on Monday that it had
“been working on deportations and will continue to do so”,
and warned that the effort would extend beyond immigrants.
❌“Expect naturalized citizens to start being picked up within the month,” the group’s post on X read.
(It is very difficult to revoke US citizenship, though Trump has indicated an intention to try.)

👉Deporting speakers over supposed ‘propaganda’ is a stock authoritarian move

The group has compiled a so-called “deportation list”
naming individuals it believes are in the US on visas and have participated in pro-Palestinian protests, claiming these individuals “terrorize America”.
A Betar spokesperson, #Daniel #Levy, said in a statement to the Guardian that Betar submitted 🆘“thousands of names” of students and faculty they believe to be on visas from institutions like Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, UCLA, Syracuse University and others to representatives of the Trump administration.

The group claims to have “documentation, including tapes, social media and more” to support their actions.
It claims to be sharing names with several high-ranking officials, including the secretary of state, Marco #Rubio; the White House homeland security adviser, Stephen #Miller; and the attorney general, Pam #Bondi, among others.

The White House and state department did not respond to questions about whether they are working with Betar or other groups to identify students for deportation.

The fediverse answer to TikTok is on its way.
Signups opened this week for #Loops, a short-form looping video app from the creator of Instagram alternative #Pixelfed, reports TechCrunch.
Users who’ve signed up can post up to 60 seconds of video, according to details shared by developer #Daniel #Supernault on Mastodon.
He added that using sounds and remixing others’ videos is coming,
as are pinned profile videos,
and that users will be able to “curate” their comment sections.
Videos can be categorized, but hashtags and mentions aren’t yet supported.
The Loops Pixelfed account has posted example videos. Supernault has posted screenshots and screen recordings, as well.

“We will drill, baby, drill,” Trump said in July as he officially accepted the Republican nomination at the party’s national convention in Milwaukee.

Indeed, early plans suggest that Trump aims to ♦️radically remake the Department of the Interior,
which oversees more than 500m acres (200m hectares) of public lands,
manages the country’s national parks and wildlife refuges,
and is responsible for protecting endangered species.

❇️Whereas Joe Biden made safeguarding public lands and the transition to green energy a centerpiece of his time in office,
🆘Trump and his allies would reverse many of Biden’s policies,
remake the civil service
and implement a new agenda focused on slashing regulations, weakening environmental protections, and expanding oil and gas development across the American west.

⚠️One of the figures involved in crafting this vision is #Daniel #Jorjani, who served as the top solicitor at the interior department during Trump’s term, according to two sources who have spoken with Jorjani recently.

A lawyer who formerly worked for the organizations affiliated with the conservative #mega-#donors Charles and David #Koch,
Jorjani currently serves as chief operating officer and principal deputy general counsel for the far-right advocacy group #Citizens #United,
whose president, David Bossie, was Trump’s deputy campaign manager in 2016.

Federal judge blocks employee abortion, IVF protections
at thousands of Catholic employers nationwide

The group that brought the challenge to a new federal policy argues it cannot be forced to accommodate
"immoral infertility 'treatments.'"

A federal judge in North Dakota issued an #injunction on Monday ❌blocking the🔸 Equal Employment Opportunity Commission🔸 from protecting
any employees of any members of a nationwide Catholic association
who are seeking time off or other accommodations under the #Pregnant #Workers #Fairness #Act
for an ♦️abortion or
♦️in vitro fertilization ( #IVF ) treatment.

U.S. District Judge #Daniel #Traynor, a Trump appointee to the federal court in North Dakota, issued the🔸 religion-infused preliminary injunction🔸 to partially
🆘 block enforcement of an EEOC rule implementing the 2022 law,
👉along with related implementation of Title VII of the #Civil #Rights #Act of 1964,

as to the Catholic Benefits Association and its members
— current or future
#nationwide.

The order covers ⚠️more than 8,000 employers
— including thousands of churches
— across the country.

The #PWFA was passed in December 2022 and is supposed to protect covered workers from discrimination on the basis of “pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions”
by, in part, requiring employers to provide employees with reasonable accommodations.

The EEOC proposed its implementing rule for the PWFA in August 2023,
stating in part that abortion and fertility treatment, including IVF,
are covered by the law’s protections.

That rule, which does not relate to insurance coverage, went into effect in June.

Judge Traynor concluded that the CBA is likely to succeed in its challenge to the rule and related Title VII enforcement guidance under the "Religious Freedom Restoration Act".

Any appeal would go to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit,
which only has one Democratic appointee among its 11 judges.
