Hey fedi, I need some advice regarding managing identities online:

I am now studying CS, and as much as I dislike it, GitHub and LinkedIn "profesional" profiles have become a requerimient.

My conflict arises when that need clashes with not wanting to have PII on my profiles. But not wanting to segregate my contributions on two different accounts.

What do you folks do?

I was an #EE undergrad, when I backed into #CS. This was the age when assembly was the JavaScript of the day and structured programming was the state-of-the-fart. So, it was a jolt, when I first encountered Test-Driven Development #TDD in the early 2000s, thanks to the luminaries like Kent Beck, et al. Brilliant stuff!

But, at the risk of being drawn and quartered, I do say that TDD is a bit of a misnomer and an overstatement. Honestly, answer this: do EEs really create the hardware test suits first, before conducting analysis and design, and do CSs really create the software test suits first, before performing analysis and design?

No, we do not! We analyse the problem, we study the requirements, we search for inspiration in the literature, we sip our tea or coffee, we select a candidate solution, we create a plausible design, we implement a prototype, then we test—yes, THEN, WE TEST—if our wild imaginations have any basis in reality at all.

So, I prefer a more down-to-earth descriptionof TDD, which says, "test early, test often, test as much as practicable", not "test first, because".

So my very young god child wants to build robots. After some basic electric circuits and an intro to logic, we will do a bit of #bash scripting. For starters, making the robot say looped a nursery rhyme.

#Princeton's biggest crypto boosting computer scientist Jaswinder Pal Singh has somehow ended up in the middle of an alleged corporate fraud involving (yet another) member of the Forbes 30 under 30.

I don’t know any details about this but the fact that JP Singh has been using Princeton's name to provide legitimacy to cryptocurrency for years and has now somehow landed in the middle of what looks like an egregious and massive corporate fraud going on at CaaStle is… interesting.

arXiv.orgSeeLe: A Unified Acceleration Framework for Real-Time Gaussian Splatting3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has become a crucial rendering technique for many real-time applications. However, the limited hardware resources on today's mobile platforms hinder these applications, as they struggle to achieve real-time performance. In this paper, we propose SeeLe, a general framework designed to accelerate the 3DGS pipeline for resource-constrained mobile devices. Specifically, we propose two GPU-oriented techniques: hybrid preprocessing and contribution-aware rasterization. Hybrid preprocessing alleviates the GPU compute and memory pressure by reducing the number of irrelevant Gaussians during rendering. The key is to combine our view-dependent scene representation with online filtering. Meanwhile, contribution-aware rasterization improves the GPU utilization at the rasterization stage by prioritizing Gaussians with high contributions while reducing computations for those with low contributions. Both techniques can be seamlessly integrated into existing 3DGS pipelines with minimal fine-tuning. Collectively, our framework achieves 2.6$\times$ speedup and 32.3\% model reduction while achieving superior rendering quality compared to existing methods.

arXiv.orgNutriTransform: Estimating Nutritional Information From Online Food PostsDeriving nutritional information from online food posts is challenging, particularly when users do not explicitly log the macro-nutrients of a shared meal. In this work, we present an efficient and straightforward approach to approximating macro-nutrients based solely on the titles of food posts. Our method combines a public food database from the U.S. Department of Agriculture with advanced text embedding techniques. We evaluate the approach on a labeled food dataset, demonstrating its effectiveness, and apply it to over 500,000 real-world posts from Reddit's popular /r/food subreddit to uncover trends in food-sharing behavior based on the estimated macro-nutrient content. Altogether, this work lays a foundation for researchers and practitioners aiming to estimate caloric and nutritional content using only text data.
