Today, I was helping one of my younger cousins with his homework assignment. We paused because my aunt had dinner on the table.
I teased and told him to hurry up because his older brother would would eat all the garlic bread. He replied:

"One sec, let me save with the funny square button."

Funny square button? That's a floppy disk, sweetie!

He replied: "What's a floppy disk?"

I've never felt so old...

If you had told 11 year old me when I was starting out that one day I would own a computer I would have been wowed, at the time we were making a long distance call to a university mainframe, using a teletype machine with a papertape reader to program it. If you had told me that I would end up with some many that I had to break out the label printer to keep track of what each one was doing, and which button on the KVM was which machine, I would not have believed you.

I remember being younger and upgrading a computer every 2 years or so being a normal thing.

Today, my 8 year old desktop feels more than capable.

Was upgrading so frequently really needed in the past or am I looking at things differently because I’m using my own money?

I’m guessing that it’s due to computers being so much more powerful now than they were before.

In Antitrust (2001), Ryan Phillippe plays a young programmer who joins a flashy tech startup, only to uncover dark corporate secrets. Tim Robbins is the ruthless exec pulling the strings, immersed in a world of glowing CRT monitors, endless lines of code, and CD-ROM fueled innovation.
