Na tentativa de fazer com que as aulas de programação fugissem da mesmice, fiz uma proposta pra turma um tanto... peculiar. E com adolescente, esse tipo de coisa, é sempre uma aposta arriscada, né - ou eles topam ou eles acabam com sua autoestima e sua dignidade.
Enfim, eles piraram e temos agora, nescendo, a Ilha-continente de Lovelace:

Um desenho, numa lousa, de um mapa de uma ilha dividida em 8 territórios: Reino de Python, COBOLand, SCRATCHstão, República de Basic, RUSTsburgo, HTMLia, Czonia e Assemblystão. Duas ilhas menores no Mar de Ada: Ilha de Java e Ilha de Pascal.

I read that there are about 24K COBOL programmers in the U.S. and they are retiring at about 10% per year. I programmed in COBOL back in the day. Maybe I should get back into it in my free time. 😆

#GCC 15 integrated a COBOL frontend,¹ and #GNU COBOL 4 seems to make the performance no longer atrocious² compared to the damn expensive proprietary COBOL compilers.

And that’s likely a game changer for many huge, mission critical codebases.

In fact there are only foir reasons that determine wages:

1. Can it be automated or outsorced overseas?
2. How spechalized is it?
3. How organized are the workers?
4. Are said workers willing to strike?

I.e. #Carework is paid shit despite neither being outsorceable nor automateable nor trivial is because #Careworkers ain't organized nor willing to strike, knowing that doing so will cause pain, suffering and death!

Whereas a #COBOL programmer maintaining the #OS360 code of a big bank is just a business expense to the bank even if called in to fix broken code at 0300 local for a 6-digit pay or 5-digit hourly rate repsectably...

Here's the customary #introduction: i'm into #C and tolerate C++ on a daily basis at work, i've also used others like java, kotlin, python, PHP, etc and am curious about #COBOL, #AdaLanguage and #erlang.

My dislike of jenkins is only surpassed by my hate of githubactions and everything MS-related. AI is not I, only A. I'm interested in #selfhosted stuff but atm that's a VPS with some sites, which doesn't really count. For now #syncthing is quite useful and #wireguard is on the horizon once i reformat/reinstall my current #gentoo (i'll keep the root #ZFS aproach and am on the fence regarding #XFCE or #KDE), would be interesting to have a barebones #KVM/#QEMU running all the stuff and i digress.

@fedibikes_de @Rad @tluhh Klar, man könnte die Ampelschaltung anpassen. Aber ich nehme an, dass diese ebenfalls noch in Cobol programmiert wurden. Und wie wir alle aus der IT-Branche wissen, sind die letzten #Cobol-Entwickler Anfang der 90er in Rente. Also besser Farbe beim Baumarkt kaufen. Ist halt billig 👍
