I'm so looking forward to the annual crabapple bloom at The Arb. And the magnolias, redbuds, rhododendrons, daylilies, tulips, etc. Here are some flower photos I took there during early May 2021. The first shot with the bumblebee was with my Fuji xf80mmf2.8 macro, the second is the xf35mmf2, and the others with the xf23mmf1.4. All of my favorite prime lenses of all time.

A bumblebee flies to collect pollen from white crabapple blossoms. Even at 1/800th of a second shutter speed, only one wing is clearly visible, due to the angle and slightly different position in the cycle. They are busy bees for sure at this time of year. Isn't it cute?

With the F2 lens wide open the pink crabapple blossoms are mostly out of focus, but it creates an impressionistic feel that I really like. The hints of the blue sky complement the vivid pink and balance things out nicely.

It was a really bright and sunny day, so to shoot with the lens open to f2, with the pink crabapple flowers backlit like this I had to set it to 1/8500s at f160. It was also a very windy day, so that balanced things out and froze any motion.

A white magnolia blossom that is growing from a very tiny nub right next to the v of the trunk. It was something that I hadn't seen before, and it made for a very easy shot, with an interesting composition. The light was so beautiful that evening. This is at F1.8 for a shallow depth of field, to blur out the background. Not open all the way to f1.4, so it made more of the flower and back texture sharp.

This is the Tussilago farfara, In the Netherlands it is called "small coltsfoot". It looks like the dandelion, but is smaller and blooms earlier, in the Netherlands already from February on. The leaf develops after the flower at the end of the winter. After flowering the heads nod downwards. After a while they straighten up again and the spherical fluff ball unfolds. Top left and diagonally below two fluff balls of coltsfoot. The first vague. Next to it and slightly off-centre a faded bent flower head. This bent head will later straighten up and also become a beautiful fluff ball. In the background vague light green, many small, yellow, vague balls of coltsfoot that is still in bloom.
