Despite this it was nearly lost to time due to not being published until well after Bach had passed. Der 11.4. war 1727 der Karfreitag - und da wurde J. S. Bachs #Matthäuspassion uraufgeführt. Weit über 2 Stunden ist dieses Wunderwerk lang und damit die längere der beiden erhaltenen Bach-Passionen. Nach Bachs Tod geriet das Werk in Vergessenheit und wurde erst von Mendelssohn 1829 wiederentdeckt. Danach begann eine einzigartige Erfolgsgeschichte.
