On my spare #Thinkpad P52s laptop, I've installed #Debian #Trixie, using the alpha installer.

I've tested the advanced installer because I wanted to check if the systemd-boot loader works during installation, which it does.

I'm staying with #XFCE because I tried both #KDE and #GNOME, and both have issues for me, with the former being a little unstable in its current transition state.

But all things considered, #Trixie is looking to be a solid release. In #XFCE, it's been as rock solid in use as my #Bookworm #Stable installation on my main desktop.

The only small niggle I'm currently checking is that the external 4K monitor sometimes doesn't correctly set after login on power up with the laptop lid closed. It is set as Primary display, without mirrored displays, so each can have unique settings and resolution.

I'll keep doing twice-weekly updates on #Trixie and see how things go. Any bugs, I'll check if already logged or otherwise log new ones. But so far, as I say, I've had none.

I don't know if this interests anyone but over on Reddit someone said they didn't think @xfce was lightweight anymore, and I said I think it's just most distros will add a bunch of stuff to it, I conducted a test and it came up 350 MB or RAM at idle. reddit.com/r/xfce/s/OK42cIYnCP

Meanwhile you've got Windows 11 requiring over 11 times that just as a minimal system requirement.

I also definitely don't think I'm ready to fully switch over either way, unless it's something with touch, like this aforementioned machine, I'm still into the blank slate slow and steady of it all with #Xfce. Wayland progress is slow and the weather plugin breaks more than it should (which is ideally never) but I don't have to be afraid of release B being radically different to release A like what happened from GNOME 2 to 3.

Absolutely! While xfce4-terminal is really fantastic, #Xfce as a whole stands out for empowering users. Compared to other GTK-based environments like GNOME or, perhaps, Cinnamon (which I’ve used less extensively), Xfce delivers unmatched granular control across its tools. It’s a philosophy of flexibility! 🐁🎛️

I mostly want to do stuff, so I'm leaning towards sticking with what I have for now.

I have tested #trixie in a VM, and there were some stability issues, but that was a few weeks back and some transitions were still happening at the time.
I may take another stab at it now that the Transition and Toolchain Freeze has happened.

#thunar is a great file manager that gets out of your way, is performant, and is easy to add custom commands to. It's a big draw when compared to FMs in other desktop environments.

My #xfce setup is functional and pretty, with consistent theming and icons across GTK and QT apps.

So, in all likelihood, I will stay with what I know and think again once #trixie is released in late summer.
