Maybe the saddest thing about Mastodon is that it seems like a place where internet arguments could be reasoned discussions that don't devolve into insults, but it's not. The higher character limit, lack of algorithms, etc have done nothing to make people less toxic.

I was just talking to a Jacobin who was arguing in favour of treating all Republican voters like they're just as evil as the politicians they elected, because, well, they elected them, right? She wanted to adopt a stance of extreme intolerance towards anyone even remotely responsible for the evil we're seeing.

I asked what that thought process implies for her, a person remotely responsible for an enormous amount of animal suffering and environmental destruction, through her purchasing of animal products at the grocery store (an assumption, to be sure, but one that she didn't correct). If it's okay for her to tell Republican voters to go die in a ditch, is it okay for me to do the same to non-vegans? I had asked this earlier in the thread, and didn't repeat the question quite as explicitly this time, but I said "You "vote" (with your wallet) for..." And specifically mentioned how "buying beef always kills cows". Nothing in my reply could possibly be construed as having anything to do with any literal election.

This was her response: "Jesus FUCKING CHRIST...WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? You're whining about how I'm choosing to gas animals and grind them up BECAUSE I VOTED TO STOP CLIMATE CHANGE? YOU HAVE THE NERVE to say Harris lost and it's my fault BECAUSE I VOTED FOR HER? You are off the rails, sweetheart." [capitalization in original]

This same thread had someone tell me I'm basically Hitler because I abbreviated a paragraph describing predictable behaviour to "like NPCs" (a paragraph I then typed out in full, to make sure there could be no more unintentional misunderstandings). They then made several replies to other people talking about how the left is doomed because people like me want to condemn people in the strongest terms over nothing.

So yeah. Some people are just as impossible to reason with here as they are on Twitter. Do not engage. #Mastodon #Internet #SocialMedia #Trolls #Trolling #Extremism

I am presently involved in a contretemps with a redheaded Riefenstahl on TikTok. This fascist doesn't understand basic constitutional law and all she does is stare vapidly at the screen and duet my TikToks. And I always get new followers. So I have been responding to her by speaking in different languages that she doesn't understand and will never have the curiosity to comprehend.

If you want to troll the MAGA Cult, come at them with non-English languages! Ha!

@Hex By aggressively shortening posts, social media limit our global conversation to dual interactions: we won't talk about how A impacts B and C, and reciprocally from B and C.

So lots of legitimate activist takes get lost in translation. This is also true for the cyberpunk utopia: how technology would enable an actual social media, the internet, and following this permanent democracy.

We didn't see the web 2 coming. I have strong opinions on the topic: https://gotosocial.social/@oceane/statuses/01JRATNZGECKJDBQMDWSXS2WKQ

An eon later, anarchists have promoted Mastodon (despite its inherent flaws) from a wither anarchy scope; current developments from and around the GNU project (around Org, Guix, and Skribe (with the Haunt and Skribilo implementations, as well as Linux Mint, GNOME…) make it irrelevant today. For example, as a Scheme fork Skribe actually is among the most simple ways to write a document in a Turing-complete language. Similarly, one could write in the Gemini syntax and export their posts as PDF thanks to Skribilo.

These improvements can't be overstated.

Another reason was to provide a shelter to actual trolls – socially isolated people often living with ADHD and depression, struggling with the most basic aspects of public infrastructure, lacking sleep, comfort, or the ability to maintain a decent hygiene. Twitter has gamified trolling, but by doing this at the expense of their own users they've gamified solving social problems – how to get people's attention without crossing their boundaries.

Trying the #100DaysToOffloadChallenge with some of the aforementioned software (for example by using an ox-ghost or an ox-writefreely helper) on the topic of solving social problems from the scope of your niche might be disruptive, especially by bridging this to your humanities cursus. I suspect that about 1500 free software trolls live in my town, so one could host horizontal events dedicated to solving social problems through academic references.

That is, IMHO, one efficient way to speed up activist work in a plurality of areas.

These are, IMHO, interesting structural causes to the obsessive, if not monotropic, focus on the dystopian aspects of cyberpunk, that happen on the web 2. There is no particular reason to load a website to work on a personal document when Emacs, Org, and/or Skribilo exist; other reasons can be read in Guy Debord's (very accessible) “The society of the spectacle” book (1967), leading to what communities of goth/lesbian/leftist Instagram users have openly appropriated as “cybercore”.

gotosocial.socialPost by Océane, @oceane@gotosocial.social“Computers were a mistake?” You can't be serious. The web was a “mistake” -- err, it was promoted by Google executives, governments, and clueless journalists. Who figured out once they realized their mistake that they didn't want to lose their jobs to the development of an open, public blogg...

🤖📈 Welcome to the world where thinking people are "cultists" and #online #trolling is now an official criterion in scientific inquiry. Apparently, if you're not being told to "kill yourself" by keyboard warriors, you're not questioning hard enough. 😅🔍
