British Steel: Scunthorpe furnaces to close ending 150 years of UK production

> British Steel blames #DonaldTrump as it announces plans to shut Scunthorpe blast furnaces

> The closure will signal the end of virgin steel production in Britain, following the end of primary steel making in Port Talbot last year. Britain has been producing the alloy since the 1850s, with the metal playing a key role in the industrial revolution.

Oliveira de Azeméis: Is Ferpinta Polluting the Ínsua River?

The Portuguese Environment Agency has launched an investigation into Ferpinta, following concerns over discolored, ferrous-tinged water flowing from its Carregosa facility. Something’s slightly wrong here. British Steel owned by the Chinese company, Jingye. I’m not against international cooperation, but China isn’t exactly top of our friendly country list. Steel production’s a pretty important industry, and we shouldn’t be relying on China. In a quote from “Blackadder” it’s like putting your “John Thomas” in the hands of a lunatic with a pair of scissors.

British Steel plant at Scunthorpe
BBC NewsBritish Steel closure threat puts up to 2,700 jobs at riskThe company announces a consultation that could see the closure of two blast furnaces at Scunthorpe.

I was more surprised to learn that both the Chinese bought the blast furnaces and they hadn't already closed down (perhaps there is a case to renationalise this industry? Steel is a vital material and we shouldn't be so dependent on importing it in an increasingly uncertain world..)
