I'm exploring #Matrix as a #slack replacement. So far #tuwunel and #Element seem to be giving me all the features I use on a day-to-day basis.
Anyone tried using these and hit a roadblock?
Alles wird zugeknallt mit AI-Scheiße, aber dass #Slack mich automatisch informiert, wenn ein Mitarbeiter nicht mehr in seinem Huddle ist, das geht natürlich nicht.
Assuming a complete workspace backup is taken - does anyone know of tooling that will reproduce a Slack backup in a web browser, along with search?
Use case - if an org has to migrate away from Slack, but wants to preserve any institutional knowledge trapped in there.
Unexpected. Not. Slack wont support using Firefox Focus to access their services. Yet another reason to look for alternatives.

On the Matrix organizations' business partnerships with imperial military alliances and with the police
I see a lot of posts about how shitty the Matrix Communication Protocol (henceforth Matrix) implementations are, but I hardly see any posts talking about how the Matrix Foundation (henceforth MF) and New Vector Ltd. (henceforth NVL) (trade name Element)—the two sister organizations that, in essence, form the Matrix world—are busy building business partnerships with imperial military alliances of nations that are enabling and perpetrating genocide at present, and with police forces actively suppressing and crushing the resistance of anti-capitalist movements, of campaigners for climate change action, of anti-genocide protestors. They have (or are trying to have) commercial relationships with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), with the German armed forces, and with various police forces in Europe. They are also wooing the US Department of Defense. This blog post talks about the letter to the US DoD by US senators Ron Wyden and Eric Schmitt urging for the rapid adoption of Matrix. This blog post says that Element is "incredibly fortunate to be working with trailblazers like ... the US Department of Defense ...".Appendix: Is the Matrix Foundation truly independent of New Vector Ltd.?
Someone might argue that it is New Vector Ltd. forming business partnerships with NATO, with the police forces, etc. The Matrix Foundation—the custodian of the Matrix protocol—is an independent entity and has nothing to do with these commercial relationships. The blog post cited above suggests otherwise, it shows that the Matrix Foundation is keen on being a player upholding and implementing the "International Rules-Based Order". But if we ignore the ideological alignment with New Vector Ltd. expressed in the blog post, can we say that the foundation is truly independent of its for-profit sibling? In the interest of transparency, we think it's important for people to know that most of our staffers are employees of Element, working under a contract with, and funded by, the Foundation. The exception is our Managing Director who contracts directly with the Foundation.
THAT any actual or potential conflicts of interest of Matthew Hodgson and Amandine Le Pape (the "Conflicted Guardians") arising from or connected with their directorship and/or shareholding in New Vector Limited (whether direct or indirect interest or duty that conflicts or may conflict with the interests of the Foundation or their respective duties to the Foundation) be and are hereby authorised in accordance with section 180 of the Act, and accordingly, the Conflicted Guardians shall be entitled to participate at any board meeting for voting and quorum purposes in respect of the matters detailed in their respective declarations of interest annexed to this resolution.

You know #Slack right? It's that #tool that some of us have known for the amount of "noise" it generates per second…

Extremely accidentally clicked a “generate AI summary” button in #Slack while trying to switch windows and folks I need a shower.
Turns out that the weird clipboard-reading behaviour of #Slack is indeed deliberate, for some purpose involving making auto-login work (although I still don't 100% understand the details of why it's necessary).
But better still, you can turn it off, by asking the Linux Slack binary to load this URL:
slack://setting/?update=isClipboardReadDisabled:true
Thanks to @relsqui and @apparentlymart for putting me on the right track!
(The Slack employee who told me about this config setting also warned of possible login problems if I used it. In fact I didn't have any – login still works fine for me.)
A weird thing about #Slack on #Linux #X11: whenever it gains keyboard focus, it immediately reads the X11 clipboard, even if you didn't try to paste anything. I see no evidence that it _does_ anything with what it reads, but I know it reads it.
I found this out by accident, because I wrote a stunt X11 client which owns the clipboard for just long enough to paste _once_, and then terminates. The idea was to queue up three different pastes on the command line, and paste them in quick succession into fields of a form. Works very well, _unless_ I accidentally mouse over Slack on the way to the form I want to paste into – then my focus-follows-mouse activates it, and it consumes one of my clipboard strings!
I have no idea why, or whether it's on purpose. I'm prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt, by assuming until further evidence that it's some unforeseen emergent consequence of the huge wobbly tower of libraries and wrappers and browsers that the desktop Slack app is built on top of. But it's not great. Some password managers will put passwords in the clipboard!
Today in "ffs software leave me the hell alone", dear #Slack when I take the time to write a markdown link, would you please by default NOT add preview.
Ooop, #Slack isn't loading. Guess that's a day off for everyone!!
@heiseonlineenglish OH GOD PLEASE NO, NO, NOOOOOOO!

It's time for a public beta of my passion project, and to go live on the Slack Market, I need al least 10 active workspaces.

At least, identity integration helps explain why #Slack is (disturbingly) so popular in #FOSS. There was much cross-marketing w/ #Github; that predates both the (respective) Salesforce & Microsoft acquisitions. (TIL) it continues! https://slack.github.com/
At #SFC, we exert much effort trying to help our member projects leave Slack & the most common answer we get is “but I have to use it for work anyway”.
The English word for this, of course, is “surrounded” — not a good thing.

@greve I think many people got locked in to #Slack during their VC period when it was FaiP & encouraging “community”. My friend's (whom I met after the SalesForce acqusition & was eventually fired by SalesForce) whole team's job was to help #FOSS & other volunteer communities get their feature requests met & questions answered.
Also, Slack was insidiously well-timed: IRC had truly show it would remain complicated & XMPP had lost steam after Google ended Wave.
TL;DR: classic free as in heroin.
Well, everybody had an extra couple GB of RAM on their desktops to run a mediocre and confusing web-based client, so why not?
More seriously, our company tried #Slack for a while, but it just didn't fit so thankfully it got dropped before it spread insidiously. Unfortunately, it got replaced by Teams which is pretty much as horrible.
Then again, I was also there when they used Google {Chat/Talk/Hangouts/G+/Whatever}. And there was a season of WebEx for desktop-sharing.
As much as folks talk up the video-sharing, pretty much every call is just folks with their video turned off, so we only need audio-conversations, group chat, and desktop & file-sharing.
