It&#39;s not only degenerating real communication, it&#39;s degenerating people and their brains.</p><p>And even in the Signal app for phones I have to delete all animated garbage, because there is no option to deactivate this bullshit.</p><p>It&#39;s nice that Signal is open source, but because it&#39;s centralized and in the US, we might look for something else. Signal could have to shut down, the code be forked, and a great deal of rewriting done to run multiple instances on expendable, possibly Torified underground servers.</p><p>Security upgrades in Matrix might be cheaper and more effective than that.</p><p>A possible bypass for Signal would be to force all messages to be disappearing messages, with a maximum available time equal to or shorter than the response time required by this new law-or even simply a new limit to how long Signal SERVERS retain an undelivered or backed up message to that time limit. A user's cell phone is not a "covered platform" as it is not a "web service" at all.</p><p>For you as an activist this means to learn to use Matrix or another decentralized encrypted chat system as well as Signal. Signal is believed by many to have stronger encryption than Matrix, but it's anyone's guess if its central server model can survive Trump and the current wave of repressive legislation.</p>
