Hey @doriantaylor, I have some more dumb semantic web questions.
1. If I *don't* want to use a full existing ontology, because I intentionally want to have a simpler model during early phases of a project, is there a .. I guess a "sanctioned way" to enhance my ontology as time goes on without losing fidelity?
I know OWL's SameAs can identify individual resources as the same as some other resource, but this would kind of be that, only at the ontological level, maybe.
Yesterday, I've attended the MSE Research Data Forum 2025 organised by #NFDIMatWerk. Aside from the conference presentations, our little ontologies group was meeting and discussing future work on ontologies in NFDI-MatWerk, including NFDIcore, MatWerk Application Ontologies, and PMDcore.

Congratulations!
Tom Plasterer was instrumental in the creation of the #FAIRdata principle, the idea - driven by the introduction of the #semanticWeb - that data should be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.
From its origins in the semantic web community, scientific research, and the pharmaceutical industry, FAIR has since been widely adopted in academia, research, industry, and enterprises of all kinds.
Hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.
As I found out the videos of the 2nd #Base4NFDI roadshow are now online. If you are interested in #ontology or #terminology integration to web services you could have a look into our demo presentation about the #Terminology Service Suite (TSS). We integrated there two widgets of the TSS to a data repository and created in this way a #semantic search engine and #FAIRdata
Today in the ISE 2025 lecture on OWL, the Web Ontology Language. Tired of using slide presentations (at temperatures like today and giving the same presentation all over again), I spontaneously decided to design arbitrary OWL ontologies together with the students on the good old blackboard ;-)

I haven’t really contributed to the discussion, but I’m glad to see that the `pronouns` property has finally been added to the Schema.org vocabulary after I created a GitHub issue back in 2021.
So if you’re into #SemanticWeb, you can now properly specify your pronouns as structured data: https://schema.org/pronouns

OK @doriantaylor (or anybody), one more beginner question. When does a reasoner actually do its work? So, I've got a pile of data in whatever form, and I formulate a query. Then .... what? The reasoner looks at the datatypes in the query and says e.g. "if you're asking for publications that also means books or articles?" Or does it create dummy nodes for the existing data, so there's a publication node for every book and every article?
