To clarify with the title, I attempted to write in American English, but have regretted that. I hope to redo the text and cover in British English later this year.

Flat covers flop. But cinematic 3D motion covers? They stop thumbs cold.

Is there a new #PortfolioDay every quarter? Who decides these things?
Hi everybody! My name is Æter. I am a half deaf/blind artist who lives in NW Colorado. I mostly paint bugs and write mediocre novellas. My favorite hashtag is #SciArt
If you haven't checked it out yet, my first publication, the poetry book From The Depths, is available as a print and ebook on Amazon. If you've already purchased the ebook version, it's been updated with a few new poems, so be sure to give it another look!
From The Depths is also available for preorder on other ebook retailers like Apple, Kobo, Google Books, and Barnes&Noble! On top of it being available in other ebook stores on April 19th, I'm excited to further expand the availability of my books to various ebook libraries.
It's great rereading Part 2 of #ShadowedMemories while I go through the editing process, and just coming across these scenes of horror sprinkled throughout.
"Oh, I forgot about this creepy scene."
"This is gonna give someone nightmares."
"Good work on this, past me!"
I'm around halfway through, and have mostly trimmed up some paragraphs, switched out words here and there, smoothing out the flow of the tale. I'm in an area now where I remember pondering over the pacing while writing it, as well as chapter/scene length and structure. Looks like the pacing did work out well, but I've ended up combining a few chapters that just fit better together.
That's my writing update for today. I'll be doing more editing on breaks at work tonight, while I also keep my upcoming book work in mind.
#PennedPossibilities 629 — How did you break into publishing? (If you’re already published, of course.)
If you count being #selfpublished the I’ll give a story I shared a couple times over the years. I had gotten a new job at a mortgage company and had the most boring new hire training class. A couple other people there started seeing who could come up with the raunchiest, sexiest, NSFW story before training ended. We all read each other’s works. I liked mine enough that I decided to publish
I've started the effort of going back through my books and freshening them up a bit to republish on a wider variety of ebook storefronts. It's nice using D2D, being able to toss it across different book stores and digital libraries. I do wish I didn't have to do Google Books separately. #selfpublished #author #indieauthor #writer
Readers, because of this, I highly recommend you start sharing your favorite #SelfPublished authors because bookstores will be flooded.

Quinn, Carrot. 'Thru-Hiking Will Break Your Heart: an adventure on the Pacific Crest Trail'. Carrot Quinn, 2015. @carrotquinn
-
I have become more and more of a fan of Carrot Quinn in the past few weeks. I've now read all three of her books and I'm sad I don't have another to read and also irked that I don't have physical copies. Anyone who knows me knows I am a bibliophile (a nice term for "hoarder of books"), so that'll change soon enough. There are always Carrot's blog and Instagram posts to carry me along.
-
You can see how all of Carrot's books influence each other, ideas introduced in one are carried into the next, with 'Bets' being a logical product of her memoirs. I enjoyed seeing common threads and noticing them. As a reader, that's one of the rewards of reading series of books or multiple books by a single author. Ya kinda feel like you're privy to something, some special knowledge in that way.
-
Carrot wasn't joking when she pointed out Thru-Hiking is longer than Bets. 140k vs 80k words, if I recall correctly? If there's an analogy to be drawn, the book's length, the ebbs and flows of energy (it took me days/weeks to read), knowing the end is approaching and racing to get there, but then feeling a bit lost once you've completed it, may be a suitable one for Carrot's journey on the Pacific Crest Trail.
-
It's so good. So quotable. I was sending quotes to friends throughout my time reading it. My fellow swamp anarchist @helenmlehndorf loved it too.
-
Anyone who enjoys train-hopping stories, hobos, post-apocalypse, crust punk, will enjoy this. If you dislike Christians who won't give in to their deepest joyful desires because their religion prevents them from doing so, you'll find a character to dislike in this book. It's not Carrot, but it feels like that person created a barrier to a fuller, more joyous experience. That might just be my own bias tho.

Quinn, Carrot. 'Bets'. Carrot Quinn, 2024. @carrotquinn
-
Carrot Quinn is one of my favourite contemporary authors. I loved 'The Sunset Route' (I posted about it somewhere further down my page), how visceral and sad it was, and there are similar themes which show up in Quinn's new book, 'Bets'.
-
Unlike Quinn's other two books, which are memoir, 'Bets' is a fictional story which follows a girl named Bets from her time "abandoned" as a child, escaping a decaying city and infrastructure, and the communities she finds along the journey to find her mother. I believe this was mentioned on a podcast maybe six months ago (probably one of Margaret Killjoy's because that's all I really listen to now), but the idea of a post-apocalyptic story where the protagonist journeys on a bicycle with a small dog is an instant sell.
-
It's a small book, but packs a lot in: critiques of class and the prison industrial complex, herbalism, community, survivalism, the continuity of indigenous culture while another civilization falls, the decadence and insulated security of the rich, and a cute little dog.
-
It seems like the only way to acquire a copy is via Amazon, and if you read my last post, you'll know that's problematic, so I contacted Carrot directly, but there's probably a lot to be said about this that I'm not willing to in a short Instagram post. Sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
-
However you get your hands on this, you should read it, and make sure Carrot knows how much you loved it. She shares a lot of herself in her work and it's one reason it's so good.
