"Michigan state Rep. #LauriePohutsky (D-Livonia) said she’s received death threats after revealing during a rally last week that she underwent voluntary sterilization because she was concerned about the future of reproductive health care during President Donald Trump’s second term in office.
"Pohutsky’s comments during a #50501Movement rally in Lansing last week quickly spread across the internet, including among right wing media circles. The rally was part of a national movement that aimed to hold 50 protests in 50 states on one day.
"'I refuse to let my body be treated as currency by an administration that only sees value in my ability to procreate,' Pohutsky said during the rally, emphasizing that 'a sitting government official opted for voluntary sterilization because she was uncertain she would be able to access #contraception in the future.'
"Pohutsky’s social media profiles were quickly bombarded with hostile comments.
"In one voicemail left with her office, a caller says that “godless people” are going to be “eliminated” and warns Pohutsky that she is “on notice.”
"Some of the threats have been referred to law enforcement to investigate, Pohutsky said.
"Pohutsky said that U.S. Rep. #RashidaTlaib (D-Detroit) reached out to her after the speech gained traction online, noting that Tlaib is no stranger to viral moments or receiving threats.
"The speech also garnered the attention of conservatives on a national level, including Ben Shapiro, who said of Pohutsky, “So many broken people.”
"The fourth-term House member responded to Shapiro, saying “I think the broken people are the ones who are personally aggrieved by my personal health care decision.”
"Pohutsky said she and her husband decided last year that they were done having children and began exploring options for more permanent forms of birth control, citing her concern after Trump won the election about being able to continue to access the contraception she had been using."

WASHINGTON – "U.S. House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs Chairman #BrianSchatz (D-Hawai‘i) led a letter signed by 34 Members of Congress to President Biden urging him to grant clemency for renowned Native American rights activist Leonard Peltier in the final weeks of his term. Mr. Peltier was convicted of murder in 1977 following a controversial investigation and trial, which many civil rights leaders and legal experts have called unjust, including the U.S. Attorney who prosecuted the case.
"In their letter, the lawmakers cite Mr. Peltier’s advanced age and illness, and stress that a presidential pardon is the last remaining hope for his freedom.
"'Despite the grave concerns surrounding the continued imprisonment of Mr. Peltier, who is now 80 years old and suffering from severe health conditions, including increasing vision loss, the Bureau of Prisons denied Mr. Peltier a compassionate release or reduction in sentence in April of this year; and in July 2024, the U.S. Parole Commission denied him parole. These recent denials mean only you have the unique ability to grant him clemency and rectify this grave #injustice that has long troubled #HumanRights advocates and #NativePeoples across the globe,' the lawmakers wrote.
"The lawmakers highlight the Biden-Harris administration’s unprecedented record of addressing the country’s history of injustices against Indigenous communities and urge President Biden to cement this legacy by commuting Mr. Peltier’s sentence.

BACKGROUND
"In 1977, Leonard Peltier was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of two FBI agents. His trial and conviction have been widely criticized by civil rights leaders and legal experts; key evidence was withheld, witnesses were coerced, and critical ballistics information was misrepresented. Mr. Peltier was an active member of the American Indian Movement (AIM), a grassroots movement founded in the late 1960s to organize activism around systemic poverty, discrimination, and police brutality against Native Americans. At the time of Mr. Peltier’s arrest, AIM was under deep scrutiny by the U.S. government.
"Last year, Ranking Member #Grijalva led a bipartisan, bicameral 33-member letter calling on President Biden and the U.S. Department of Justice to grant clemency to Mr. Peltier, as well as in October 2021 and February 2022. Grijalva spoke with Mr. Peltier in 2022 and recounted his description of harsh and often inhumane conditions in federal detention, including long periods of solitary confinement and major challenges in obtaining adequate medical care for his declining health."

"The bill does not require officials to provide an explanation for designating a group, nor does it obligate the #TreasuryDepartment to present evidence of wrongdoing. This lack of accountability has raised alarm bells among advocates who see it as a tool for #authoritarian #suppression.
"#RashidaTlaib Tlaib has been one of the most vocal opponents of the bill, particularly given its timing amidst heightened protests over U.S. support for Israel’s military actions in #Gaza. 'This is authoritarianism,' Tlaib said. 'This bill is designed to silence dissent and give Trump #UncheckedPower to target groups he doesn’t agree with'.'
"Other progressive lawmakers echoed her concerns. Rep. #SummerLee (D-Pa.) called the legislation 'a giant threat to free speech,' warning that it would allow the government to “label any nonprofit as ‘terrorist-supporting’ without evidence or due process—opening the door to crush opposition and silence dissent.' Rep. #IlhanOmar (D-Minn.) added that 'no one person should have the authority to silence organizations that dare to challenge government policies or speak uncomfortable truths.'
"Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), who is leaving Congress after losing his primary to a candidate backed by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (#AIPAC), described the bill as 'extremely dangerous.' He cautioned that it 'will sink us further into #authoritarianism. It is an extremely dangerous bill that would give the government unlimited power to stop the work of #humanitarian groups and target political enemies. All without transparency or evidence.'
While the bill is widely seen as a response to criticism of U.S. support for Israel, its potential impact goes far beyond organizations advocating for Palestinian rights. Costello warned that 'the danger is much broader than just groups that work on foreign policy. It could target major liberal funders who support #PalestinianSolidarity and peace groups who engage in #protest. But it could also theoretically be used to target #ProChoice groups, and I could see it being used against #environmental groups.'
"#JewishVoiceForPeace Action’s political director Beth Miller described the legislation as 'terrifying,' emphasizing its potential to suppress civil society across the board. “This bill should be a five-alarm fire for anyone who seeks to protect free speech, civil society, and democracy. "Voters in the biggest U.S. city with an #Arab-majority population shifted decisively toward Donald #Trump on Tuesday, in a stinging rebuke of the Biden administration’s policies in the #MiddleEast.
"Trump claimed 43 percent of the vote in Dearborn, Michigan, to Kamala Harris’s 36 percent. #JillStein claimed 15 percent of the vote in the city, where the #GreenParty had notched less than 1 percent in 2020.
"Trump’s margin of victory in Dearborn represents a massive reversal from the 2020 election, when Joe Biden’s won 69 percent to Trump’s 30.
"The huge shift toward Trump will not be decisive in a race where he cruised to a Electoral College victory without the help of Michigan, the state with the highest percentage of Arab Americans. The state had yet to be called Wednesday morning. Still, it was a telling sign of how completely the administration has lost Arab Americans over the war.
"Down-ballot results suggest that the move was motivated in large part by anger toward the Biden administration rather than dissatisfaction with Democratic policies overall."
