Received an email by the #NANOG mailing list in which they raise a pretty concerning thing: Apparently, #Spain started to intercept or nullroute certain IP addresses of #CDN providers. The intent is to fight #piracy during #football matches.

Do the people who pass the list of IP addresses even understand the significance of blocking a bunch of #CDN networks of various providers? Seriously?! It #censors access to tens of thousands of legitimate #websites which is blatantly accepted as a #collateral to help out some shady sports association in their #copyright?

How much shadier can a decision be? Since this is a thing, maybe they can think about taking down entire regions in Spain the next football match?

The amount of collateral damage in the name of copyright is ridiculous. The #EuropeanUnion really has to step-up their game in addressing those concerning developments. I read about multiple such blatant decisions so far. Eyeing at you, #Quad9 and #Sony...

Losing my mind over #DNS bullshit. Seems that DNS servers (#Quad9) return different answers depending on the connection method, with built-in randomness.

dig +tcp <domain> @9.9.9.9 → always correct IP ✅

Anything else, no +tcp or +edns=0, +bufsize=4096 returns either the outdated or the correct IP, less erratic without edns and smaller bufsize. 🤡 🤪

So I guess I somehow need to d̶i̶s̶a̶b̶l̶e̶ ̶e̶d̶n̶s̶ o̶r̶ ̶c̶o̶n̶f̶i̶g̶u̶r̶e̶ ̶"̶m̶y̶ ̶D̶N̶S̶"̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶o̶n̶l̶y̶ ̶q̶u̶e̶r̶y̶ ̶v̶i̶a̶ ̶T̶C̶P̶.̶ use a better DNS server.

@DoctorBrodsky @woe2you @miah given #Quad9 bowed before the #Contentmafia and censored #DNS requests, I'll continue to recommend using #OpenNIC's Servers instead

94.103.153.176 & 2a02:990:219:1:ba:1337:cafe:3 as well as
144.76.103.143 & 2a01:4f8:192:43a5::2

  • If you only add a single #IPv4 address, no #IPv6 resolution will take place over said provider or worse even no IPv6 connectivity at all...

I merely retain quad9 on said list for archival purposes. I Yeeted #CloudFlare aka. #ClownFlare since they are a #RogueISP!

Quad9: because nothing says "better #security and privacy" like trusting a completely different set of #strangers with your #DNS queries. 🙃🔒 Now you too can swap your ISP's questionable #privacy practices for an equally mysterious alternative! 🎉

@jerry Years ago when #quad9 first hit the public consciousness, i thought it seemed a good idea & began using it as my #DNS. I abandoned it again, years back now, once i realised that a litany of random site access problems i was experiencing, all went away each time i set a different DNS. Every now & then, in curiosity, i sometimes retry, but inevitably soon have to leave them again for the same reason.

#PSA: The DNS resolvers of @quad9dns seem to be unreachable, at least in Switzerland (tried via multiple ISPs).

Not only the 9.9.9.9 address, but also 149.112.112.112, 2620:fe::fe, and 2620:fe::9; even though the IPv6 addresses seem to respond sometimes.

So, if your network seems slow today, this might be the thing to change. E.g., temporarily switch back to your ISP's DNS resolvers. Or seize the opportunity and upgrade to your friendly local privacy association's DoT/DoH service.
#Quad9 #Down

What makes this worse in my view is that Nominet provides/provided “protective DNS” services (PDNS) to government agencies on behalf of the #NCSC. A service that was probably over priced and oversold in its capabilities.

PDNS is basically a #DNS service that filters out #malicious domains - just like using #quad9 except I assume only available through a lucrative government contract. Although to give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe the NCSC was giving them some extra special #threatintel?
