Just received an email from Microsoft about a 20%+ increase in my M365 subscription. They are taking the piss. Since none of my (otherwise perfectly performant) hardware supports W11, I have already been experimenting with Linux and Proton Mail and this will obviously encourage me to continue in this direction.

Proton is an awful company.

A few years ago, Proton decided to restructure their plans. For many, this meant a free upgrade without paying extra. --- Sounds nice, right?

It turned out to be a nightmare for many others.

For example, I had the original Proton Family Plan. This allowed everyone to have their own e-mail and login details.

A paid for 1 full year and mid-way, suddenly that plan was discontinued. The account had 3 e-mails (myself and two family members). Proton ended up making 1 e-mail a premium e-mail, 1 a free account, and the 3rd one vanished.

Because they made at least 1 a premium, they claimed I was not owed a refund, because I was still getting a paid service. And they were "sorry" 1 email vanished.

On Reddit, they prevented anyone from complaining. They did the same thing on Meta (Facebook) too.

Months later, they brought back the Family Plans, and you can order one today, but I would not trust Proton. Especially since now they're in the USA.

The more I dig into this, the more I have to ask myself: Seriously? How is this even possible for a company of this size ?

Proton plans to invest over 1 billion CHF across all its products and expansions by 2030.

If Proton increasingly depends on outside funding or strategic partnerships, can it really claim to be independent and safeguard user privacy, or is that just empty marketing spin?

Got a reply from #protonMail "We do use LLM to generate some code, however, all code is still thoroughly tested and reviewed for security." Not really comforting given that the big LLMs are so opposed to their basic values! And letting a chatbot scrape your files opens a giant attack surface.

Merci
