The petroleum industry ready to make things worse as usual:

"The problem is only expected to grow, in part because ramping up plastic production is “the fossil fuel industry’s plan B” as revenue from oil and gas drops, Zhu says."

In my view, in future the only form of acceptable plastic will be made from vegetable oil and only for the medical system, for single-use purposes, to be burned afterwards for sanitization. There isn't any other sensible use for plastics, despite our entire modern world depending on them currently for just about everything.

Imagine if the Grand Canyon was littered with those plastic bottles. Alas, it's fine dust so no one screams (yet):

"Collectively, about 1,000 tonnes of plastic fall each year from the atmosphere onto lands in the western United States that are protected and relatively uninhabited, such as the Grand Canyon. That is equivalent to between 120 million and 300 million plastic water bottles, Brahney and her colleagues estimate."

Plastic waste is killing us. But we can't seem to quit it. | The Debrief

After years of careful planning, negotiations in Geneva over the first-ever global plastics treaty ended in deadlock, says Eurasia Group's sustainability expert Franck Gbaguidi. Here's why the world is stuck in a plastic waste trap.

We are living inside an experiment where the control group does not exist. And unless the world finds the courage to cut off plastic at the source, and chooses leaders willing to enforce real change, we may discover too late that surviving climate catastrophe was only the prologue to a slower, quieter collapse.

“They are in our blood, in our lungs and in the first cry of a newborn child,” he said. “Our bodies are living proof of a system that profits from poisoning us. Behind every microplastic also lies a macro lie, and that lie is that recycling alone will save us.” -- Juan Carlos Monterrey Gómez after the Geneva talks

'We have missed a historic opportunity': Plastic pollution treaty talks end in deadlock.

High level negotiations between 185 countries over reaching a global agreement to combat plastic pollution ended on Friday, as rival blocs clashed over prioritising a phase out of the material or bettering waste management systems.
