Managing Network Devices via #Orgmode Table and #OpenWRT Router
karl-voit.at/2025/04/18/openwr

I do maintain only one single table with all of my devices. I can control their IP and their ability to connect to the Internet (or not).

With this table, I do have a great overview of my devices and their IPs.

I thought you might like the idea ...

derstandard.at/story/300000026

@jnv I can totally relate to accepting inconvenience in order to get other things such as less dependency, more off-screen time and so forth.

I totally get this.

However, it's a no-go to ignore all risks associated by the fact that this device doesn't receive any security updates for many years.

You just don't want to run something risky like this.

On the other hand side, since he's running an #Apple device, #privacy doesn't seem to be of any importance.

Yes, Apple should be within your risk management as well, they're too often not good at it and use most of your data for their purpose.

However, besides privacy, #security should be one of your concerns - independent of your understanding all the implications or not. Just listen to all the security experts begging you to keep your systems up to date. It's your data, your money, your life that is at stake here.

@lascapi @alternativeto IMO it's not important that you've got one tool that combines everything.

More important it that it is that flexible so that you can include/access/combine data and other tools as well.

Yes, #Emacs is probably *the* most versatile piece of software there is (and I'm using it since decades).

However, I don't use any of its built-in #email solutions (for reasons) but rather embed emails from my mail client (Evolution) so that I can link mails and open them very easily. That's the true power of advanced tooling, not the "one tool that does all of that".

And I'm aware of the irony of that message, considering the fact that Emacs has the power of including really anything(!) within its borders. 😉

And of course: it's always better when it's FOSS and not closed source in order to minimize #lockin effects (besides proper standardized, open storage formats).

Of course, if you do have long-time plans for your personal #knowledgemanagement, you should not use proprietary tools like #Obsidian, #OneNote, #Evernote and alike.

You also should think of switching to a much better (learnability, portability/compatibility, typobility, logic, featureset) markup syntax like #orgdown which is used in #Emacs #Orgmode (among other tools).

But if you start with Org-mode, you need to know the right way of doing it, as so many web pages recommend. Here's my take:

A specific blog post about the #lockin effects of Obsidian and Co (despite using some tool-specific flavor of MD) is in the making. (Please don't start a religious discussion here.)

Just for clarification: same holds true for any other markup supported by pandoc, not just #Markdown.

However, if you stick with a syntax language that doesn't come with this explosion of flavors, you have less issues converting your data - in some cases you don't even have to convert at all any more.

The issue with Markdown is that its original form defined a small minimum of elements and each tool defined its own potentially incompatible extensions. With other #LML, the "original" or its standard defines the maximum set of elements and therefore, there is no need for "flavors" and no data loss or conversion effort.

If you're using #GMail and you've learned about their latest claim to introduce real end-to-end #encryption: it's a lie.

Google has the control and/or you can't do anything against that Google takes control any time.

Real #E2EE works differently: only the sender and receiver are able to access the protected content.

arstechnica.com/security/2025/

michal.sapka.pl/2025/gmail-e2e

#Meta also defined E2EE such that the message is encrypted from the sender to them, processed in clear text and re-encrypted for the transmission to the receiver.

Don't let them fool you with false claims and wrong definitions.

@janl The purpose is to warn bystanders to invest in technological #complexity that seems to be very attractive for its advanced features without acknowledging the risks or efforts associated.

Its learning curve doesn't even allow for an easy start.

As with so many awesome tools, this is something for specific experts and not for new/occasional/advanced users.

BTDT and I've had my fair share of bad experiences.

Current pain in my setup: #NixOS. Instead of providing an abstraction layer to keep away certain OS setup & maintenance problems for good, I got into so many little & bigger troubles that I try to tell people only to use it when they are ready to invest its required learning effort all the way.

From my point of view, this also holds true for "advanced" file systems like #ZFS, #XFS, ... YMMV.

My previous comment was half in jest, but...

If someone wants to truly "own their full data" as #HTML, and also keep the "rich markup" parts accessible long-term without porting to a #notes app, they can consider adapting for themselves the approach discussed in this link.

alexwlchan.net/2024/static-web

I understand this is technical and not easy to adapt for note-taking.

AFAIK, there isn't a ready-to-use #FOSS solution around.

alexwlchan.netUsing static websites for tiny archivesI've been creating small, hand-written websites to organise my files. It's a lightweight, flexible approach that I hope will last a long time.

These days, I'm very relieved not to have followed my academic career path over a decade ago.

This way, I most probably would have ended in the #USA and would have to face severe backlash and grave decisions leaving academia because there is hardly any #PIM research outside the US.

If you're using #Microsoft #OneNote, you will face disadvantages when you don't switch to #Windows11 soon:

You are forced to "One Note on Windows" which requires a #Microsoft365 account. If you want to keep your previous computer/OS, your synchronization speed gets reduced just to punish your disobedience: windowslatest.com/2025/03/24/m

For anything that requires a certain amount of privacy/security, for anything long-term (avoiding #lockin effects), OneNote was a bad idea in the first place.

People who started with the original OneNote already faced data loss when MS forced them into the then mediocre cloud version in 2018: karl-voit.at/2018/04/21/end-of

My recommendation: re-evaluate your requirements and switch to a much better long-term alternative, such as #Emacs #Orgmode & not yet another hip lock-in monster like #Obsidian, #Evernote or other closed source #cloud solutions: karl-voit.at/2021/01/18/tool-c
