Of course, if you do have long-time plans for your personal #knowledgemanagement, you should not use proprietary tools like #Obsidian, #OneNote, #Evernote and alike.

You also should think of switching to a much better (learnability, portability/compatibility, typobility, logic, featureset) markup syntax like #orgdown which is used in #Emacs #Orgmode (among other tools).

But if you start with Org-mode, you need to know the right way of doing it, as so many web pages recommend. Here's my take:

In case someone asks why #Microsoft #OneNote is a good for nothing shitty tool:

BECAUSE YOU CAN'T OPEN TWO PAGES AT THE SAME TIME.

Who came up with this limitation? You can smoke all the sync and offline capabilities, if you cannot have two documents open at the same time. This would jump in your face if those designing the app had actually trying to work with it for any length of time, in any capability beyond jotting down a write once read never diary.

If you're using #Microsoft #OneNote, you will face disadvantages when you don't switch to #Windows11 soon:

You are forced to "One Note on Windows" which requires a #Microsoft365 account. If you want to keep your previous computer/OS, your synchronization speed gets reduced just to punish your disobedience: windowslatest.com/2025/03/24/m

For anything that requires a certain amount of privacy/security, for anything long-term (avoiding #lockin effects), OneNote was a bad idea in the first place.

People who started with the original OneNote already faced data loss when MS forced them into the then mediocre cloud version in 2018: karl-voit.at/2018/04/21/end-of

My recommendation: re-evaluate your requirements and switch to a much better long-term alternative, such as #Emacs #Orgmode & not yet another hip lock-in monster like #Obsidian, #Evernote or other closed source #cloud solutions: karl-voit.at/2021/01/18/tool-c

Ich plane allmählich meinen Umstieg von Windows auf #linux Problematisch wird arbeitstechnisch der Umstieg von #OneNote: Welche Alternativen gibt es denn, in denen ich Notizbücher bzw. Ordner (pro Fach) anlegen kann, mit Unterordnern (Themen) und Seiten (Unterthemen/Stunden)? Dazu Einfügen von Bildern, Zeichnen mit Stift, Tabellen, Export als pdf?
Und traumhaft wäre ein Import aus Onenote...
Gibt es da etwas? Gerne boosten, danke!

#Onenote: ich habe mittlerweile einen Weg gefunden, Onenote-Notizbücher zu exportieren und z.B. in #Markdown zu überführen

#Obsidian: speichert seine Inhalte in normalen Text-Dateien (auch Markdown) in Ordnern im Dateisystem. Die kann ich mit dem Texteditor und jedem Markdown-Editor bearbeiten. Ich könnte aber auch ganz einfach zu anderen Tools wie zB #Logseq wechseln ohne Datenverlust. Die Inhalte habe ich hier lokal und in keiner Cloud liegen.

@simondueckert Hi, ich folgte Ihnen längere Zeit und sehe, dass Sie beispielsweise Tools wie #Obsidian oder OneNote empfehlen bzw. Schulungen dazu anbieten.

Da in meinen Anforderungsprofilen eine langfristige Toolwahl für #PKM-Werkzeuge (ich nutze häufiger die TLA #PIM) dominiert, ist jeglicher #lockin-Effekt aus meiner Sicht zu meiden, wenn geht.

Darf ich Sie fragen, wie Sie diesen Umstand einschätzen bzw. weshalb Ihnen langfristige Datenverluste oder Migrationsaufwände offensichtlich weniger schlimm erscheinen?

Es ist ja nicht so, als ob wir gerade mit #OneNote nicht schon Situationen hatten, wo durch Abkündigung einer Version die Nutzer:innen #Datenverlust hinnehmen mussten. Ganz zu schweigen vom Verlust der #Privatsphäre durch #Cloud-Zwang.

And tool-wise: if you've had switched to #orgmode in the first place, you'd have spared yourself a lot of senseless work switching a hype for the next one and built yourself an optimized set of custom workflows over time - given enough motivation (and #knowledge) to do so and long-term perspective to aim for. 😜
