SSPL - non #OSI (Server Side Public License) is a source-available license introduced by #MongoDB and later adopted by Elastic for $Elasticsearch and Kibana starting with version 7.11. It is based on the AGPLv3 but with a modification in Section 13. This modification requires that if you offer the software or a modified version as a service to third parties, you must release the entire source code of the service, including all related management software, APIs, and other components needed to run the service, under the SSPL. This is a stricter requirement than typical open-source licenses.

In case you missed it, great post by Dan Lorenc on why it's critical to defend all the dimensions of the Open Source Definition, and why @osi 's work is essential in preserving the enormous value that open innovation created #opensource #osi

The New Stack · Open Source Is Worth DefendingThe definition of "open source" is quietly eroding. When these lines blur, trust breaks — and open source doesn’t work without trust.

ETHZ and EPFL announced the release of a Large Language Model (LLM) developed on public infrastructure: Trained on the “Alps” supercomputer at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in 8B and 70B parameters configurations, using open-source training data, respecting web crawling opt-outs during data acquisition, and natively fluent in over 1000 languages. Quoting: "The model will be fully open: source code and weights will be publicly available, and the training data will be transparent and reproducible".

I don't know how good it's going to be, but if true for me this is the real definition of "open-source" in AI (not the ridiculous, corporate-promiscuous definition by the Open Source Initiative).

@osi "The OSI is the authority that defines Open Source, recognized globally by individuals, companies, and by public institutions." -- not until you publish the election results, and stop ghosting your community.

Really glad to see the #OSI's efforts highlighted here.

I worked as a Parliament staffer during negotiations on the #CyberResilienceAct, and can say with confidence that if it weren't for OSI, it's educational work, and its efforts to connect lawmakers with Open Source developers, the CRA would have been extremely harmful for the #OpenSource community.
