@stman @theruran @50htz @vidak @forthy42 Yeah, basically attacks on schedulers or any non-static component that is software-defined makes it easy to go that way.

  • The only way one could "fix" this would be Harvard-Architecture and strictly segmented threads in hardware, which would toss all the flexibility of existing Von-Neumann-Systems out of the Window and basically result in #Mainframe-esque systems like the OS/360 'hard containers' on z/Architecture, which means 2x42U of phat iron to run 50+ year old COBOL code at 0% performance gain at bit-, cycle and clock-accuracy.

And even "#TradFinance" hates that because they refuse to train new programmers for that stuff and they are too deeply entrenched to migrate away!

Now you can print your own Mainframe z16 case perfectly fitted for a Raspberry Pi 5! 🚀

The print consists of two parts:
🔹 Mainframe z16 Modular Case (Free)
🔹 Raspberry Pi 5 Extension for the Mainframe z16 Modular Case (Paid)

#Introduction

Hey, still taking my first steps on mastodon.

I love riding my #motorcycle on small winding roads, and some dirt ones preferably.

Love my job, working on a #mainframe computer (an IBM z12 if I am not mistaken), and loving this big machine.

And can't wait to post pics I love taking. Plants, animals, human made stuff.

Absolutely love reading small articles on different subjects from the environment to psychology all the way to technology.

Since I've moved to a new instance - one I'm running myself - I though I might re-introduce myself.

I'm Jeff Markel (see profile for pronunciation) - he/him. I'm kinda old, kinda not - born on the cusp of Baby Boom I and Baby Boom 2, aka Generation Jones (1955).

I can schmooze, but am basically very shy - f2f, anyway - and very introverted. More than a few hours of f2f interaction are exhausting.

I had one sibling - a sister - who died of pancreatic cancer in 1997, at 45. I lost my dad to bladder cancer in 1991 (age 67), and my mom to breast cancer in 2006 (age 80). So the big-C is ever-looming; my odds aren't so good. But I've lived longer than my sister and my father. Hopefully the string will continue.

My wife and I have been married to each other since 1982. We have 3 "children" (in quotes only because they're long-past childhood), and 4 grandchildren. Two are in NYC and one is in LA. The oldest of the grands is 15 and in full-fledged teenager mode.

I'm Jewish, but also an atheist - if that makes sense. The ethnicity does mean a lot to me. I have always felt a sense of 'other'ness and, although I know that I benefit from white privilege, I no longer really think of myself as "white" because the people for whom that matters most do not - and that's perfectly fine with me.

I get obsessed with things. I bake sourdough. I make cocktails. I walk long distances. I develop websites - using Drupal mostly, though I'm now learning React and a few other Javascript frameworks like Sveltekit and Astro - and of course those all have adjacent, and necessary, technologies that I also want to learn. As I used to say in my Twitter profile, when I was still there, I try to learn something new every day.

I've been a software person since the late 1970's. I started out on mainframes - but that's become a distinction without a difference. I've written code in many languages, from Algol to YAML (I tried to think of one starting with Z but Zend is all I could come up with, but that's a company, not a language 🤷‍♂️). Still working, but I do plan to "retire" in the next 18 months or so - in quotes because I will certainly need to do something after that besides sleeping in.

Introduction

Redoing my #introduction as it was a bit of a sparse one when I joined.

I am a lifelong #technology enthusiast, having worked in Financial Services IT for more than 25 years, across multiple disciplines including:
* #Unisys #MCP-based #mainframe platforms (A17/A19/HMP NX 6800/Libra 180/Libra 6xx/Libra 890)
* #EMC #Symmetrix storage arrays (DMX 3/4 and most recently VMAX) including experience of #SRDF(S), SRDF(A), BCV
* #WindowsServer (2000 through 2019) including #ActiveDirectory
* Various #Linux/ #Unix OSes (#HPUX/ #RHEL/ #Centos/ #Ubuntu/ #Raspbian) including experience of #GFS/#GFS2 SAN storage clustering
* Virtual Tape Server technology (B&L/Crossroads/ETI Net SPHiNX, #TSM)
* Automation/Scripting (#PowerShell, #NT #Batch, #DOS, #Bash, #OPAL)
* #Security (#PrivilegedAccessManagement, #LeastPrivilege, #IAM, #Firewalls, #EDR)
* #BusinessContinuity/#DisasterRecovery (Design/Implementation/Operations)

I’m focused on learning and getting hands-on with #RaspberryPi at home and #cloud computing solutions both at work and at home.

I moved into a #SecurityEngineering role in 2020, so a lot of my focus is now more security focussed across all tech stacks.

My main focus at present when it comes to cloud is predominately #Microsoft #Azure, with Google and AWS of interest also, as well as other cloud infrastructure services such as those provided by CloudFlare, though I’m planning a move away from them due to their moral/ethical choices.

Away from work and tech, I love to #travel the world with my wife and enjoy very amateur #photography to record our adventures.

I also love most genres of #music, live in concert when I can, with a particular love of #Rock/ #Metal and also #Trance (coincidentally, given the profession of a somewhat more well known namesake of mine!).

Might as well toot an #introduction as well.

I've been here since 2019 according to my profile, but haven't tooted once until today.

I'm a #cybersecurity consultant who mainly does offensive security, but I very much enjoy picking apart #malware given the opportunity. I'm also technically a Ph.D. student researching metamorphic malware packers, but right now I'm on a hiatus from academia.

Other than #security I'm also drawn to completely normal things, like #categorytheory, #formallanguages, #osdev, and most recently the #mainframe. I'm also passionate about #foss, #unix, #linux, #openaccess and stuff like that.
