A much closer crop on the green bottle fly pic I just posted. I just love seeing the tiny lenses that make up that strangely shaped compound eye.

Extreme closeup photograph of a green bottle fly on the side of a cone of yellow coneflower florets. Only the fly's head and thorax are in frame. This species of fly has an iridescent metallic-green thorax and abdomen that flash oranges and yellows and are covered in rows of fine hairs. It has large, red-brown compound eyes and a silvery metallic head with two small antennae, maxillary palps, and other mouth parts. It has two transparent wings with dark veining and six black legs.

Also from yesterday, here's a flat-tailed leaf-cutter bee (ID app suggests) on my orange butterfly weed.

Extreme closeup of a (likely) flat-tailed leaf-cutter bee using its proboscis to probe the interior of an orange butterfly weed flower with out of focus orange flowers and green foliage in the background. This leaf-cutter species has similar features to honeybees but with a black and white striped abdomen, a dark thorax and head covered in fine white hairs, two antennae, three simple eyes on the forehead, two large compound eyes facing forward, six legs, and transparent wings with dark veining.

Stink bug on what appears to be a false sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides) though many of our native yellow Asteraceae family flowers look very similar.

Extreme closeup photograph of a stink bug (an ID app suggests Euschistus tristigmus) standing on the golden yellow florets at the center of a golden yellow flower that appears to be a false sunflower (ID suggests Heliopsis helianthoides). This species of stink bug has a brown, pitted exoskeleton with light tan specks and vague patterning, a tan underside and tan legs covered in small brown dots. Its backside (abdomen) is shaped like a shield topped with a large plate (thorax) above it that tapers to points on either side of the body. The head is also plate-like, connects just below the thorax plate, and tapers toward the mandibles. The stink bug has two brown antennae, two brown bulbous compound eyes, and two ruby-colored simple eyes slightly above and behind the compound eyes.

The flower is a light shade of pink.

A damselfly, sitting in a green leaf. It's all blue and black, with a single bright blue segment on its abdomen, around the tip, very flashy.
The blue of the thorax and head is slightly more pruinish, hence less bright.
