schamspeare<p>The more I read (and watch) about MGM, the more it resembles a cult. Not in a negative way, but just in terms of its commune insularity, “family” atmosphere, and in the sense of pride verging on arrogance of all of the contract holders. I thought of that while watching clips of old Oscar ceremonies. The atmosphere is so cordial, close, and self-congratulatory. schamspeare<p>Does he bear a resemblance to Franz Kafka? I picture Kafka when I read about him.</p><p>The MGM / Thalberg story stands as a strong counter-argument to the auteur theory. What was Thalberg if not the prime example of an anti-auteur. He wouldn’t even have thought of himself as an artist, but what else to call him?
