I've been messing around with Jekyll hosting this past month and I finally have something to show for it.

Essentially, I wanted a way to host Jekyll (and hopefully other static web frameworks) on something other than the Microsoft owned GitHub.

It turns out that by linking together some open source software it's relatively easy to put together something workable. Also, HTML has come a long way since I started doing this. So much stuff just works out of the box now, so I don't even need a complicated back end.

A minor #Ruby version upgrade in #FreeBSD broke my #Jekyll static site generator. Again.

My flow consists of a #Git hook triggering Jekyll, after which the generated site is rsync’d to the web server.

Question now is whether to keep it fast and simple, and migrate my #Forgejo instance to some flavor of #Linux or to complicate things and set up a Linux based Forgejo runner on a separate VM…

Is there a #Markdown parser that handles Markdown in #HTML tags in Markdown especially nicely?

MDX (#NextJS, #Astro) has a problem (for me) where pretty formatted markup has the tendency to introduce unnecessary <p> wrapping children of tags.

Marked-It (#11ty) is funky and requires a blank line before but not after to process Markdown in HTML - it can't handle inline only Markdown like `**bold**`

Kramdown (#Jekyll) requires explicit opt-ins on HTML tags but I think it mostly works?
